Lafayette parades go on as scheduled; ice closes festival

Mardi Gras parades are rolling as scheduled Tuesday but La Festival de Mardi Gras a Lafayette at Cajun Field has closed.

La Festival de Mardi Gras a Lafayette at Cajun Field was shut down due to wintry weather, Lafayette Sheriff’s Capt. Kip Judice said.

Ice that formed on equipment forced carnival officials to shut down the rides, Judice said.

And the bands scheduled to play Tuesday at Cajun Field also have been canceled.

Judice said Cajun Field remains open for parade spectators who can park for free to see.

The three parades rolling through Lafayette Tuesday will end at Cajun Field.

Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said the King Gabriel Parade kicked off at 10 a.m. as scheduled.

The Lafayette Mardi Gras Festival parade will roll at its scheduled 1 p.m. start, immediately followed by the Independent Parade at 2 p.m.
