“An Evening with Hank Williams Sr.” launches series in Pointe Coupee

The Arts Council of Pointe Coupee will open its seventh Performing Arts Series with “Lovesick Blues: An Evening with Hank Williams Sr.” at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Julien Poydras Museum and Arts Center, 500 W. Main St., New Roads.

The performance stars Hugh Harris as Hank Williams. Harris has an associate degree in country music.

Williams’ memory serves as the setting for this story as he travels in the back seat of his baby blue Cadillac on his way to a show in Canton, Ohio — a show date he would never make. Along the way, the audience learns about Williams’ life based on sentiments that are often too easily found in the lyrics of the songs he wrote.

Adding to the performance is a recreation of Williams’ four-piece Drifting Cowboy backup band. Their musical renditions of those timeless classics are virtually identical to the original 78 rpm records. Off-stage voices representing the people closest to Williams help to tell the story while keeping himself as the sole focal point of the performance.

Individual tickets are $28 for individuals and $10 for students. Season tickets, which also include two future performances, are $75.
