8 midcity businesses get set for art hop

The Mid City Merchants second annual summer art hop, A Mid City Night’s Dream, is set for 5:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, July 12.
The summer art hop is a smaller, more intimate event than the spring and fall midcity art hops, allowing the opportunity to see new work, talk with local artists and socialize with others who love art.
Participating businesses are Artvark, Ltd., 672 Jefferson Highway; Atomic Pop Shop, 2963 Government St.; Brew Ha Ha!, 711 Jefferson Highway, 2A; Elizabethan Gallery, 680 Jefferson Highway; Mosaic Garden, Rue Cou Cou and Sally’s Circa 1857, 1857 Government St.; and Ty Larkins Interiors, 1948 Government St.
Elizabethan Gallery will open Louisiana, Life & Lagniappe, a show of new paintings by 20-plus artists of the Associated Women in the Arts. The exhibit features many Louisiana-themed works and runs through Saturday, Aug. 25.
Rue Cou Cou is showing new work by gallery artists including Jovann Armstrong, Denise Greenwood, Amy Anderson, Mickey Asche and Milo.

BRCWC summer musical
Baton Rouge Christian Women’s Connection will hold its Summer Musical 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at Oak Lodge Reception Center, 2834 Sherwood Forest Blvd. Performers will include Mackenzie Hollis, Allie Waguespack, Addison Hollis, Jonathan Simeral and Meghan Simeral, Michelle Holland and Carla Hebert. LASM Members Only Night
Louisiana Art & Science Museum is holding a 50th birthday party 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 12. Participants can decorate party hats and a cake, design electronic jewelry and visit the exhibit Digital Painting: John F. Simon Jr., tour the Ancient Egypt Gallery, shop in the museum store, learn with Dr. Spark and sing with Mrs. Dorothy the Shaky Egg Lady, visit the planetarium and see One World, One Sky (5:30 p.m.) and We Chose Space! (6:15 p.m.).
Members are asked to bring their membership cards. Lapsed or inactive members and new friends can join at the door. Additional guests of members will be charged $9 for adults, $8 for children or seniors. Food trucks will be parked outside the museum.

Chorus to perform
The Salem Youth Chorus will perform at 5 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 3552 Morning Glory Ave.
The chorus from Salem, Ohio, is led by Jon Simsic, organist and choirmaster at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Canton, Ohio. The 17-member group has performed Choral Evensong at The Washington National Cathedral and in cathedrals in Canada, England, Ireland and Wales. The group has released three CDs and won a prize at the 2010 national music competition, The American Prize.

Williams exhibit set
An exhibit featuring artwork by Bonnie Smith Williams will run through Sept. 10 at Bella Vita Salon & Spa, 11917 Ferdinand St., St. Francisville. The exhibit Louisiana’s Top 200! A Bicentennial Celebration Exhibit runs through Sunday, July 29, at the West Baton Rouge Museum, 845 N. Jefferson Ave., Port Allen. In Covington
The St. Tammany Art Association, 320 N. Columbia St., Covington, announces the artists selected for the 47th National Juried Artists Exhibition, the Summer Show, which opens with a reception from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 14. The show runs through Aug. 11. Cash awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m.
The juror for the exhibition is Miranda Lash, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Selected artists are from Louisiana, Illinois, Massachusetts, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, North Dakota, Texas and Missouri.
