UNO unveils new logo

It’s a different pirate representing UNO athletics.

And, school officials and supporters point out, hopefully the start of a different era for the Privateers.

“There’s a buzz in the city and it’s time to take advantage of it by building our university back up,” school president Peter Fos said Wednesday as a launch party for the new athletic department logo featuring a more-stylized Buccaneer than most reincarnations.

“So this is not just about athletics, but about the entire university.”

The event also was to celebrate the UNO’s entry into the Southland Conference after Fos last year reversed an earlier decision to leave Division I.

The logo, designed by Pottsville, Pa.-based Joe Bosack & Co, features a pirate with a fleur-di-lis on his underneath “New Orleans Privateers.” The color red has been removed from the logo, leaving only blue and silver.

“It is certainly an objective to introduce a logo which will create awareness and foster interest in the University of New Orleans and Privateer athletics,” Athletic Director Derek Morel said. “We are excited for this next phase in the renaissance of Privateer athletics and confident this ‘new look’ along with our ‘new league’ will create lift for our brand and help raise our profile.”

To promote the new logo, the school partnered with Fanatics Retail Group to bring new merchandise to the department’s online store, as well and local retail outlets.

“Most of our graduates still live in this area,” men’s basketball coach Mark Slessinger said. “They need to be able to walk into a store and buy a UNO T-shirt or hat.

“This helps us get our brand out there.”
