HAMMOND — Southeastern Louisiana University Athletic Director Bart Bellairs resigned Friday and the school named baseball coach Jay Artigues as interim athletic director.
Bellairs has been at Southeastern Louisiana since November 2009.
“I appreciate the dedication and integrity that Bart brought to administration of our athletics program,” Southeastern President John Crain said. “Bart has been a stalwart advocate for operating our athletics program in a way that is focused on the overall success of the student-athlete.”
Assistant baseball coach Matt Riser will take over as Southeastern’s interim head coach.
“Coach Artigues has demonstrated great leadership skills and commitment to Lions athletics,” Crain said. “I am confident he has the skill set to serve as an effective Interim Director of Athletics.”
Artigues compiled a 276-188 record in eight years as SLU’s coach, including a 36-24 mark in 2013. He inherited a program that had not finished above .500 since 1998.
“I am honored and humbled,” Artigues said. “I’m also extremely excited about the future of Lions athletics and confident that Matt Riser will continue the strong tradition of Lions baseball.”
Riser has spent six seasons on Artigues’ staff and five as a full-time assistant. He served as the Lions’ primary hitting coach, while working extensively with the outfielders. Riser also served as the third-base coach and recruiting coordinator.
Southeastern will move forward immediately with the search to identify a permanent athletic director.
