CLINTON, Miss. — The LSU-Eunice softball team is heading to its third consecutive NJCAA Division II national championship game after a 6-1 victory against Phoenix (Ariz.) College on Friday.
The sophomore duo of Kelsey Hollier and Taylor Simon both had two hits and combined to drive home five runs for the top-seeded Lady Bengals (61-5) in their victory against the No. 2 seed.
“It’s a good feeling being in the championship game, but we were here last year. Hopefully we have learned from that,” coach Andy Lee said.
Simon gave LSUE the lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI single to bring home Brooke Thomas. In the second, she extended the lead with another RBI single that scored Thomas. Hollier followed with a bases-loaded double to left-center field that extended the lead to 5-0.
In the top of the fourth, it was Hollier coming through again, this time with an RBI single to plate Thomas and give the Lady Bengals a six-run lead.
Phoenix scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth, but Lady Bengals pitcher Julienne Broussard kept Phoenix off balance the rest of the way, tossing a four-hitter while striking out four.
LSUE beat Jones County (Miss.) Junior College 8-2 earlier Friday to advance.
The Lady Bengals’ next opponent will be determined Saturday morning; their next game will be at 1:30 p.m. LSUE must lose twice to be eliminated.
