Offense shines in Nicholls State spring game

THIBODAUX — The Nicholls State University football program closed the book on its spring season with its annual spring scrimmage Saturday at John L. Guidry Stadium.

With the defense claiming a victory last week, the offense stepped up this time around, scoring six touchdowns, including a 54-yard pass from Beaux Hebert to Carey Fortson. The other five came in red-zone situations, with one rushing and four passing.

Hebert tossed three touchdowns, while Hayden Cardiff was credited with two.

In first-down situations, the offense picked up seven first down,s including one on the first play of the day as Fortson juked through the defense on a 15-yard reception. Following a 12-yard run by Dalton Hilliard Jr., the defense got its first turnover on a Michael Henry fumble.

Hebert came back in the fourth series and reeled off three big plays in a row. After hitting Darryl Watson Jr. for a 25-yard catch on the left hash, the Colonels executed a perfect play-action pass when Marcus Washington caught a ball out in the flat and ran for 50 yards before being knocked out of bounds inside the 5 by Josh Dewey.

On the next play, Hebert found Fortson wide open for a 4-yard score.

In the red-zone scenarios, defensive lineman Keithen English got into the backfield making a tackle for a 2-yard loss before Washington rushed up the middle for a 6-yard TD.

Edet Udoh recorded his first sack of the day, but Hebert came back and connected with Terry Lucas Jr. for a 16-yard touchdown.

Cardiff put together a solid series, throwing 23-yard touchdown passes to Josh Hanberry and Forston.

In the final series, Hebert closed the drill with a 28-yard TD to Nick Scelfo.

In third-down situations, the defense gave up just one first down. Defensive back Jordan Hanberry intercepted a deep pass, followed by another interception by linebacker Tyler Harrington.

Udoh closed the scrimmage with his second sack.
