Austin defeated Southeastern Louisiana 68-57 on Friday in the Southland Conference men’s basketball tournament semifinals. The Lumberjacks (27-3), who with the victory passed their previous high for wins in a season set in 2007-08, will play the winner of Northwestern State for the championship Saturday night. Taylor Smith had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Hal Bateman contributed 11 points and five assists for Stephen F. Austin, the regular-season champion which has won six in a row since losing to Southeastern 54-50 on Feb. 16 in Hammond. Onochie Ochie scored 12 points for the Lions (13-18), the No. 4 seed. Dre Evans scored 11 points, and Todd Nelson and Brandon Fortenberry had 10 each. Northwestern St. 55, Sam Houston St. 52: Dequan Hicks and Marvin Frazier scored 11 points each to lead Northwestern State. The second-seeded Demons (22-8) were playing their first game in the tournament after a double bye. The score was tied at 51 when Hicks made two free throws with 39 seconds left. James Thomas of Sam Houston State was fouled with 19 seconds to go, made the first free throw but missed the second. Shamir Davis made two foul shots for the Demons with 13.2 seconds remaining, and the Bearkats missed two tries at a tying 3-pointer. Darius Gatson led all scorers with 14 points for sixth-seeded Sam Houston State (17-17). Southland women ORAL ROBERTS 79, McNEESE STATE 66: In Katy, Texas, McNeese State fell to top seed Oral Roberts to end its two-year reign atop the conference. Caitlyn Baggett had 20 points, and sister Ashlyn added 16 for the fifth-seeded Cowgirls (18-14), who claimed the past two Southland tournament titles. Cecilia Okoye, the newcomer of the year, added 17 points and 12 rebounds. Kevi Luper and Jaci Bigham each had 17 points for ORU (17-12), which will face Sam Houston State in Saturday’s championship game. WAC women SEATTLE 80, LOUISIANA TECH 61: In Las Vegas, Seattle built a 24-point halftime lead to cruise past Louisiana Tech in the WAC tournament semifinals in Orleans Arena. Seattle (20-9) advances to the championship game to face Idaho. Louisiana Tech’s season ends at 14-17. Lulu Perry had 23 points and converted all 10 of her free-throw attempts to lead the Lady Techsters. Whitney Frazier added 12 points but sat the rest of the first half after committing a pair of fouls in the first four minutes. Ashley Ward paced Seattle with 14 points. NAIA men LSU SHREVEPORT 77, EVANGEL 70: In Kansas City, Mo., Brandon Davis had 23 points and 17 rebounds to lead LSU Shreveport past No. 9 seed Evangel (Mo.) in the second round of the NAIA Division I tournament. Guards Rodney Milum and Aaron Jones added 19 and 11 points as LSUS (26-6) advanced to a Saturday quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Columbia (Mo.) College. Stephen Cotten had 22 points for Evangel (26-7), which never led. FAULKNER 72, XAVIER 59: In Kansas City, Mo., Faulkner (Ala.) rallied in the second half to top No. 15 seed Xavier in the first round of the NAIA tournament late Thursday. Faulkner (29-5) used a 15-4 run to take command in the second half. The Gold Rush (24-8) was within four points with six minutes left before Faulkner pulled away. Wanto Joseph scored 16 points to lead Xavier. Denzell Erves had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the team’s first double-double in the national tournament since Bruce Seals in the 1973 quarterfinals.
