Mar 9, 2013 23:48 Illinois State defeats Cajuns in softball Illinois State defeats Cajuns in softball Advocate news services March 09, 2013 Comments KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The University of Louisiana at Lafayette softball dropped a 4-3 decision to Illinois State on Sunday at the Diamond Nine Citrus Classic The Cajuns finished the tournament with a 2-3 record, falling to 15-5 on the season. In the second inning, ULL loaded the bases with no outs and got back-to-back fly outs before Natalie Fernandez and Brianna Cherry hit RBI singles for 2-0 lead. Illinois State took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run home run by Elizabeth Kay and an RBI single by Kolby Hoffman after an error. That ended the day for ULL starter Jordan Wallace, who was relieved by Kristin Martinez. Wallace (8-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out four in four innings. Martinez allowed one run on three hits while striking out three in two innings. The Red Birds (11-10) added one more run in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-2. ULL’s Matte Haack led off the sixth inning with her first triple of the season, and Sarah Draheim drove her home on a ground-out to second, cutting the lead to one. Brianna Cherry went going 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead ULL. Taylor Baxter (6-3) gave up eight hits, three earned runs and three walks with one strikeout to get the complete-game win. The Cajuns travel to take on Texas in a Wednesday doubleheader at 5 p.m.
