CLEARWATER, Fla. — The 12th-ranked Louisiana-Lafayette softball team took on two nationally ranked Friday teams at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with mixed results, falling to 15th-ranked Michigan 3-1, then defeating 14th-ranked South Florida 3-0.
In 13 innings, the Cajuns pitching staff allowed two earned runs on five hits and three walks.
The Cajuns dropped the first game to Michigan, losing in a fast-moving pitcher’s duel between two all-conference sophomores.
Jordan Wallace got the start for ULL for the seventh time this season, and Sara Driesenga tossed for Michigan.
Both starting pitchers limited their opponents to fewer than five base runners. Wallace allowed just two hits, a walk and a hit batter, and Driesenga allowed four hits and one walk.
The Wolverines scored first, thanks to a two-run home run in the second inning. It was just the third home run hit off Wallace this season.
The Cajuns’ lone run came in the fifth inning, after Brianna Cherry grounded out to second base with the bases loaded, scoring Leandra Maly.
Hamilton started the second game. She went the distance this time, picking up the win and tossing a two-hit shutout.
