Jeffery Walker scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Baton Rouge Community College defeated Southern-Shreveport 59-56 Saturday to win the Miss-Lou men’s basketball title.
Morris Wright added 13 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for the Bears (6-1 Miss-Lou), who won their first title in their four years of playing basketball. Darrice Whitley had 12 points and five rebounds.
Southern Shreveport fell to 4-3 in conference.
SLU 54, STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 50: In Hammond, Brandon Fortenberry scored 16 points and Roosevelt Johnson grabbed 14 rebounds as Southeastern Louisiana upset Stephen F. Austin.
The Lions (10-13, 8-5 Southland Conference) avenged a 52-40, Jan. 17 loss at Stephen F. Austin. The Lumberjacks (21-3, 12-2) had won five straight, 16 of 17.
Down 12-0, the Lions finally scored on a Roger Woods jumper and trailed 23-21 at halftime. Todd Nelson (12 points) later hit one of his three 3-pointers for a 48-45 lead with 3:22 left.
Southeastern Louisiana scored its last six points on free throws.
The Lumberjacks were led by Hal Bateman’s 15 points and Taylor Smith’s double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds).
Northwestern State 84, Nicholls State 79: In Thibodaux, Brison White scored 15 points off the bench as Northwestern State overcame a 13-point, second-half deficit.
Northwestern State (18-6, 12-2) moved into a tie for the Southland Confernence lead.
Fred Hunter scored 24 and Dantrell Thomas added 22 for Nicholls State (6-17, 5-8).
McNeese State 69, Lamar 62: In Beaumont, Texas, Jeremie Mitchell scored 17 points and hit two key free throws to seal the win for McNeese State.
Mitchell’s two free throws with eight seconds to go capped a 9-0 run by McNeese State (10-13, 4-9 Southland) in the final two minutes.
Rhon Mitchell had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead Lamar (3-22, 1-12).
NICHOLLS STATE 67, NORTHWESTERN STATE 50: In Thibodaux, Nicholls State’s strong shooting helped lead the Colonels past the Northwestern State women’s basketball team 67-50 Saturday afternoon in the Southland Conference.
Nicholls (16-8, 8-5) shot 48 percent (23-of-48) from the field, including a 54 percent shot outburst in the second half. Northwestern State (9-15, 5-9) was 18-for-53 from the field and 4-of-19 from behind the arc.
Former St. Michael star KK Babin led the Colonels with 16 points, followed by LiAnn McCarthy (15), Emani White (15), and Alisha Allen (10).
Jasmine Bradley led the Lady Demons with 16 points and nine rebounds. Jasmine Upchurch and Keisha Lee each had 11 points.
ARKANSAS STATE 77, ULM 58: In Monroe, Jalen O’Bannon and Jane Morrill each scored 20 points to lead Arkansas State.
The Red Wolves (14-12, 11-6 Sun Belt, took advantage of 24 ULM turnovers.
with 20 points each.
Ashleigh Simmons led the Warhawks (7-8, 5-11) with 18 points and seven rebounds.
MERIDIAN CC 77, DELGADO 52: In Meridian, Miss., Jackie Breland had 19 points and Raven Lyons scored 10 for Delgado.
