Six Jaguars received individual awards, including a sweep of the coach of the year honors for Roman Banks and Sandy Pugh. Banks led the men’s team to a 19-12 overall record and a 15-3 conference mark as it clinched the title with two games left in the regular season. Pugh led the women to a 16-2 record, which included a title-clinching 71-66 victory against Texas Southern in the regular-season finale Saturday. The Jaguars have won three of the past five SWAC regular-season titles under Pugh. Forward Calvin Godfrey was named to the All-SWAC first team and also was named Newcomer of the Year. Forward Malcolm Miller joined him on the first team, and guard Trelun Banks, son of the coach, was Freshman of the Year. Jaguars forward Jasmine Jefferson was named to the All-SWAC women’s first team. Both Southern teams have first-round byes in the SWAC tournament, which begins Tuesday in Houston. The women will play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the men will play at 8 p.m. Wednesday. NOTES: Jaguars guard Kendra Coleman also was honored; she was named SWAC Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season. She averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds and made 87 percent of her free throws in wins against Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern. … The men’s and women’s games Wednesday will be broadcast live on 97.7-FM, WYNK.
