The game will be held at Reliant Stadium in Houston, home of the NFL’s Houston Texans. The kickoff time for Southern’s opener was one of 23 announced Friday by the American Athletic Conference, the league Houston joins this fall, for nonconference games involving teams from the conference. “Anytime you open your season with a Division I foe, it brings a lot of excitement to your preparation,” Southern coach Dawson Odums said. “It’s always exciting when you get to take on a David vs. Goliath type game. We understand the kind of task it will be, but we’re training hard right now and hope we’re getting ready for that challenge.” Southern and Houston are meeting for the second time in football, the first time since Houston’s 55-3 win in a 2008 season opener. ESPN3.com, which will carry the Southern-Houston game, is an online application that streams games over the Internet.
