BY LARY BUMP| Special to The Advocate Aug. 07, 2013 Comments FORT WORTH, Texas — The Southern Jaguars thought they might be in for a late night Wednesday. Instead, they’re in for an early morning. A thunderstorm Wednesday night postponed Southern University’s first game in the SWAC baseball tournament until 9 a.m. Thursday, when the Jaguars and Alabama A&M return to LaGrave Field. Rain had delayed Wednesday’s four first-round games more than an hour. The grounds crew was working on the field at 7:15 p.m. to prepare for the day’s final game between Southern (20-21), the No. 1 West seed, and Alabama A&M (8-39), the No. 4 East seed, when the field was covered again. At 9:15 p.m., coaches Roger Cador of Southern and Michael Tompkins of A&M met with conference officials and determined that the game should be postponed. “There was still lightning in the area and still some more rain in the forecast,” Cador said. Cador said he isn’t taking a victory over the Bulldogs for granted. If Southern defeats A&M, it would meet Alabama State in a winners bracket game at 9 p.m. Thursday. A morning loss to Alabama A&M would have the Jaguars playing at 3 p.m. against Prairie View, which lost 16-0 to Alabama State on Wednesday. Cador said he still expects senior left-hander Jesse “Doc” Holiday, who had been scheduled to pitch Wednesday, to start Thursday morning. “Doc Holiday did warm up tonight, so we want to make sure he’s OK,” Cador said. The tournament, making its debut in Fort Worth, got underway Wednesday morning when Alcorn State defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-8. Alabama State followed with its crushing win over Prairie View in seven innings. Jackson State, the No. 1 East seed, then held off a late rally from Texas Southern to win, 5-3. JSU will host Alcorn State in a game scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday. It is one of five games scheduled for Thursday at the SWAC tournament, including the Southern-Alabama A&M game.
