Alabama A&M rolls past Grambling
NORMAL, Ala. — Deaunte Mason threw for three scores and Kaderius Lacey ran for 165 yards and scored rushing and receiving touchdowns to give undefeated Alabama A&M a 38-17 Southwestern Athletic Conferenc win Saturday night over winless Grambling.
Alabama A&M (5-0, 4-0) is off to its best start since its 1966 undefeated season.
Mason threw touchdown passes of 32 yards to Resha DeJarnett, 30 yards to Lacey and 32 yards to Bobby Goldsby, all in the 28-7 first half.
Lacey, who had 20 carries, also rushed for a first-quarter 45-yard score.
Mason was 13-of-18 passing for 247 yards.
D.J. Williams was 11-of-30 for 152 yards and one TD for Grambling State (0-4, 0-3) before he was replaced by Frank Rivers (3-of-9 for 52 yards) in the fourth quarter.
Alabama State 54, Alcorn State 14 : In Lorman, Miss., Alabama State notched touchdowns on a blocked punt, a forced fumble and an interception return en route to crushing Alcorn State 54-14 Saturday.
Isaiah Crowell was the Alabama State (3-2, 3-1) stalwart on offense, rushing for 127 yards and a score.
The Hornets rolled from there, going up 34-0 midway through the second with help from Winton Steward’s end-zone fumble recovery and Deandre Rashada’s 19-yard interception return for a score. Crowell also had a 61-yard rushing touchdown during the Alabama State point barrage.
Tennessee State 40, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 13: In Nashville, Tenn., Telvin Hooks ran for two touchdowns to help Tennessee State pull away from Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
After an early field goal, Benjamin Anderson’s 55-yard touchdown pass to Ladarius Eckwood put Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-2) up 10-0.
With Tennessee State (5-0) trailing in the second quarter, Hooks, who finished with 108 yards on 14 carries, took over. He ran it in from 15 yards out to cut the Tennessee State deficit to 10-6. Then, in the third quarter with his team trailing 13-12, Hooks had a 2-yard run with 7:05 left in the frame to put the Tigers on top 19-13. They never trailed again. Trabis Ward’s 1-yard run made the score 26-13 at the end of the third quarter. Ward carried the ball 21 times for 87 yards.
Jackson State 34, Prairie View 13: In Jackson, Miss., Willie Bell recovered a Prairie View fumble in the end zone with 27 seconds left in the third quarter to break a tie and spark Jackson State.
The Tigers (2-3, 2-2) tacked on two fourth-quarter touchdowns and haven’t lost at home to the Panthers (0-5, 0-3) since 1970.
Bell’s recovery of a fumble by punter Travis Jatzlau came after the Tigers had backed the Panthers into a fourth-and-14 from their 8-yard line.
