Saints camp tidbits for Thursday, July 31

A few minutes with ... Ryan Griffin

Saints backup Ryan Griffin is competing for the No. 2 job at training camp and has looked good doing so early.

TA: Was the first Saints quarterback challenge the public was exposed to (which Griffin won) the highlight of your Saints career thus far?

RG: Yeah, it was. I hadn’t won one before that, and they didn’t videotape the two or three we had before that. And then Drew and the Saints tweeted out (the one Griffin won), so I got a lot of publicity — a lot of happy Green Wave fans.

TA: When St. Louis tried to grab you last season off the Saints practice squad, did that give you even more confidence that you have a future in this league?

RG: Definitely. In this business, you’re always confident in yourself. You have to be. So to have another team come out and demonstrate that, it definitely makes you feel better. But it’s a process. That’s obviously a positive, but you’re always trying to get better and find ways to improve.

TA: You’ve had a chance to work with a lot of the young receivers. Who stands out?

RG: They each have their own little trait that stands out. (Charles) Hawkins (of Southern) can really fly, and (Brandon) Coleman is obviously, really, really tall (6-foot-6) and long and has a great range. And Seantavious (Jones) is making plays all over the place. And we know Cooks can go out and make plays for us.”
