Saints minicamp: Quick read Saints minicamp: Quick read Advocate staff photo by MATTHEW HINTON -- New Orleans Saints cornerback Corey White takes part in a drill during Saints minicamp Wednesday at the team's training facility in Metairie. by ramon antonio vargas| firstname.lastname@example.org June 23, 2014 Comments A bad note to start On the first three plays after simulated crowd noise was cranked up Wednesday, the Saints’ first-team offense struggled. First, Junior Galette got around the left side of the line for what would’ve been a sack in a game. Second, quarterback Drew Brees bobbled what appeared to be an early snap from center Tim Lelito. Then, given a chance to run with the 1s, 6-foot-6 undrafted receiver Brandon Coleman dropped a short pass along the right sideline. The good news is meaningful snaps were almost three months away as of Wednesday. A better note It’s very early in the process, but Austin Johnson helped his case to make the Saints as a reserve fullback-tight end and special teamer. In a drill with backups, he made three catches out the backfield for notable gains. It’s also a favorable sign for him that he worked with the Saints’ first-team kickoff coverage unit Wednesday. Johnson was on the Saints’ practice squad last year. The other fullback on the Saints’ roster, veteran Erik Lorig, was a relatively high-profile signing in free agency this offseason. Participation report As was the case Tuesday, Saints tight end Jimmy Graham (contract dispute) and rookie receiver Brandin Cooks (finishing up school year at Oregon State) were absent. Present but not participating in drills were NT John Jenkins (reportedly, pec surgery), S Jairus Byrd (back surgery), WR Joseph Morgan (knee), DE Moses McCray (undisclosed) and OLB Cheta Ozougwu (undisclosed). WR Andy Tanner participated in on-field work Wednesday after sitting out Tuesday. The third and final day of minicamp Thursday is open to the public (weather permitting). Practice begins at 11 a.m.
