Saints add Jason Weaver, waive Chris Givens Saints add Jason Weaver, waive Chris Givens (source: AP) by ramon antonio vargas| email@example.com June 10, 2014 Comments The Saints on Monday added a tackle who played at Edna Karr High School in Algiers, and in turn they waived a wide receiver who was hurt throughout his two seasons with the team. Offensive tackle Jason Weaver returns to New Orleans. Receiver Chris Givens was waived after being an undrafted rookie free-agent pickup out of Miami (Ohio) for the Saints in 2012. Weaver, who played at Southern Miss, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent last year. He was waived at the beginning of training camp, claimed by Cincinnati and then cut again before he latched on to Miami’s practice squad for the remainder of the year. Weaver signed a reserve contract with Miami for 2014 but was waived with a “non-football” injury at the beginning of May, which is why he was available for New Orleans on Tuesday. At Southern Miss, the 6-5, 305-pound Weaver started in 2011 and 2012, playing right and left tackle. He earned second-team All-Conference USA honors one year and an honorable mention the other. He was at Arizona Western Community College for two seasons and was an All-American there prior to transferring to Southern Miss for the 2010 season, most of which he missed with a knee injury. In previous interviews, Weaver has said part of the reason why he chose to leave New Orleans and go to Arizona Western after graduating from Edna Karr was because his older brother, Dunstan, was fatally shot in the 7th Ward neighborhood of his hometown in 2006. A suspect was eventually arrested, but prosecution was later refused. Weaver told The Hattiesburg (Miss.) American in 2012 that he left to “go a different route” than people he grew up with and plays in memory of his brother, who left behind a son Jason is fiercely close to. “His memory is with me in my little nephew,” Weaver said of his older brother. Saints tackles Weaver will be working with include starters Terron Armstead (left), Zach Strief (right) and backup Bryce Harris. Others are rookie sixth-round pick Tavon Rooks, Marcel Jones, Manase Foketi, Ty Nsekhe and Thomas Welch. Meanwhile, Givens sat out all of the 2012 campaign due to a preseason injury, and he then missed 2013 with a shoulder he hurt in training camp. He is of no relation to the Rams receiver who has the same name.
