Former LSU QB Jordan Jefferson, FB Jacob Hester among 70 at Saints tryout

In the days leading up to the Saints’ rookie minicamp this weekend, the names of many players attending on a tryout had filtered out via news and social media reports.

But two prominent ones weren’t revealed until the minicamp roster was distributed to media members Saturday morning: those of former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson and fullback Jacob Hester.

Jefferson won an SEC championship and went to the BCS title game with LSU in 2011 before signing with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent. He was soon waived and spent time with the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League and the Pittsburgh Power arena team in 2013.

Hester won an SEC and a BCS title with LSU in 2007. In four seasons with San Diego and one with Denver from 2008 to 2012, Hester rushed 111 times for 400 yards and three touchdowns. He caught 56 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns before the Broncos cut him during the 2013 preseason.

Jefferson and Hester are among 38 tryout players and 70 total participants at the Saints’ rookie minicamp.

Meanwhile, a couple of other notes of interest:

— At the minicamp on a tryout, Tulane’s Derrick Strozier is labeled as a running back. He was a cornerback for the Green Wave, posting 101 total tackles, 18 pass break-ups and five interceptions (two returned for TDs) in 20 starts.

— Rusty Smith, selected in the sixth round of the 2010 draft by the Tennessee Titans, is another quarterback on a tryout with the Saints. Logan Kilgore out of Middle Tennessee State is a third quarterback at the minicamp, under contract as an undrafted rookie.

In three career appearances over his four seasons with the Titans, Smith went 23-of-45 for 234 yards and four interceptions. He signed with the New York Giants in late April but was released May 12.

At quarterback for the Saints, Drew Brees is entrenched as the starter, and Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin are considered his top two backups.

— The Saints’ said their top three 2014 draft picks had not signed playing deals Saturday morning: wide receiver Brandin Cooks (first round out of Oregon State), cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste (second, out of Nebraska) and linebacker Khairi Fortt (fourth, out of California). Fifth-round picks Ronald Powell (linebacker, Florida) and Vinnie Sunseri (safety, Alabama) as well as sixth-round pick Tavon Rooks (tackle, Kansas State) had signed deals Friday.
