Former Saint Jo-Lonn Dunbar suspended

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Rams starting linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Dunbar, who was second on the team with 157 tackles last season, is able to participate in all team activities before the suspension, which begins with the season-opening game against Arizona. He will be able to practice and play in all exhibition contests.

The 6-foot, 235-pounder Dunbar, who played for the Saints from 2008-11, is the second St. Louis player suspended by the league this season. Running back Isaiah Pead will miss the opening game for violation of the substance abuse policy.

49ers DL suspended

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs has been suspended for Week 1 against Green Bay for a violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

The 49ers, in announcing the penalty Wednesday jointly with the NFL, said Dobbs will be eligible to return to the active roster on Sept. 9.

He was arrested Nov. 30 for suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana.

Miller misses court date

DENVER — Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, already facing a suspension for violating the NFL’s drug policy, is now confronted by charges that he failed to show up in court on misdemeanor traffic violations.

Miller was arrested in the Denver suburb of Centennial on Sunday and then released, Arapahoe County sheriff’s detention chief Louie Perea said Wednesday.

Raiders lose LT Veldheer

NAPA, Calif. — Oakland Raiders starting left tackle Jared Veldheer will need surgery on his torn left triceps and will miss a significant portion of the upcoming season.

Coach Dennis Allen announced the diagnosis Wednesday after the team got the results of a second MRI on the injured arm. Allen said Veldheer will be a candidate to be put on the injured reserve list with a designation for return, which would require him to miss at least the first eight weeks of the season.

Veldheer is perhaps Oakland’s best player on offense at one of the most important positions as the protector of the quarterback’s blindside. Alex Barron will get the first shot to replace Veldheer. Barron has not played a game since 2010.
