Saying it has been quite a week for Plaquemine High defensive lineman Davon Godchaux would be an understatement.
Godchaux received a scholarship offer from LSU on Wednesday afternoon. The offer comes four days after the 6-foot-4, 265-pound senior-to-be received an offer from another Southeastern Conference power, defending national champion Alabama.
“This one is shocking for me,” Godchaux said. “The coaches had said all along they were evaluating me, so I figured it (offer) wouldn’t come until next month at the LSU camp.
“I talked to both coach (Corey) Raymond (defensive backs coach) and coach Brick (Haley). They said LSU wanted to offer me a scholarship. That was great to hear.”
Godchaux, rated 151st nationally by Rivals.com, is Louisiana’s No. 10 overall prospect and No. 2 among the state’s defensive line prospects for 2014. He earned Class 4A All-State and All-Metro honors as a junior with 60 tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 91/2 sacks.
After calling Godchaux, LSU also called Plaquemine coach Paul Distefano to inform him of the offer.
LSU is the 27th school to offer Godchaux a scholarship. He has other SEC offers from Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. Florida State, Nebraska, Southern California, Oklahoma State and Arizona also among the list of schools that previously offered Godchaux a scholarship.
With the LSU offer set, Godchaux said he will begin the developing a list of finalists.
“I was waiting to see what would happen with LSU,” Godchaux said. “Now, I think I can start looking at putting together a list of top five or six schools and go from there.”
