LHSAA finalizes list of schools playing up in football for this season

It’s official — only four schools have opted to play up in football this fall, according to a one-paragraph news release sent out by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association on Wednesday.

There were no surprises as John Curtis, Evangel Christian, St. Thomas More and Teurlings Catholic were confirmed as the four schools, all of whom will play up to the LHSAA’s select Division I this fall.

The four schools were part of the select Division II playoffs last fall. Curtis won the state title, its 26th, in convincing fashion.

“I don’t guess there were any surprises there,” Louisiana High School Coaches Association President Shane Smith of Franklinton said. “The schools that played up made their intentions know beforehand.

“A lot of people put blame on John Curtis and Evangel for the (select/nonselect) split. Both those schools told us they would play up if they were allowed to. And they were true to their word.”

Speculation that other schools, including Shreveport’s Calvary Baptist, might have submitted a late Monday request to also play up ended with the announcement. Calvary was the select Division III champion last fall.

The decision to play impacts just the football playoffs. All four schools will remain in their traditional football districts.

Lafayette-based Teurlings and St. Thomas More are part of District 5-4A. Evangel remains in 1-3A and Curtis is part of 11-3A.
