Bryce Wells scored on a 2-yard run and also ran in the two-point conversion in overtime to lift Albany to a 22-21 win over ninth-ranked Jewel Sumner in a District 8-3A opener played Friday night at AHS.
Josh McLain ran for 65 yards on 23 carries and scored two TDs for the Hornets (3-3, 1-0). Wells had 40 yards on 22 carries. Sumner (5-1, 0-1) scored two of its three TDs on big plays. Rhett Travis tossed a 49-yard TD pass to Kevin Coleman for one TD and Demarcus Bickham returned an interception 75 yards for another score. Travis was sacked in the end zone to force the overtime period.
LUTCHER 42, ST. MICHAEL 0: Dondre Semien ran for a career-high 218 yards on 23 carries and scored two TDs to lead Lutcher.
A 63-yard TD run by Semien was the game’s biggest play as the Bulldogs (2-4, 1-0) won their District 6-4A opener. Lutcher raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead and held the Warriors (2-4, 0-1) to just 70 yards. LHS finished with 448 total yards.
Christian Matherne competed 12-of-20 passes for 125 yards and three TDs for LHS. Destin Porter, Treylon Smith and Al’Dontrae Davis each caught a scoring pass from Matherne. Brian Bowser returned an interception for a TD for LHS. Logan Knox had 20 yards on nine carries for St. Michael.
BAKER 28, CAPITOL 14: Treylon Anderson ran for a TD, threw a TD pass, had two interceptions and scored on a two-point conversion to help Class 3A Baker (2-4) snap a four-game losing streak with a nondistrict win.
Anderson ran for 40 yards and threw a TD pass to Lester Scott. Preston Bell scored two TDs for the Buffaloes on a runs of 2 and 9 yards. Lorenzo Moore blocked a punt, had five solo tackles and three tackles for loss for BHS. Class 2A Capitol is 4-2.
TARA 24, BELAIRE 6: Kaleb Kador ran for 65 yards on 10 carries to help Tara (4-2,1-0) win its District 6-4A opener played at Scotlandville High.
Kendrick Burton added a 42-yard scoring run and contributed 47 yards on five carries. Leonard Williams (7-33, 13-yard TD run) and Da’Monte Coxie (2-34, 33-yard TD run) also scored for the Trojans. Papa Nguer had a 30-yard field goal and kicked three PATs for the winners.
