TANGIPAHOA — Rhett Travis tossed two touchdown passes to Bryant James and the defense also did its part to help Jewel Sumner to a 40-13 victory over St. Michael on Thursday night.
Coach Zephaniah Powell of ninth-ranked Sumner (5-0) praised the play of Travis and his defense.
Powell credited Jerome Cutrer, Jonathan Jackson and Kijuan Lee in the secondary for shutting down St. Michael’s pass-oriented offense. Powell said Matthew Shaw led the defensive line for the Cowboys. It was the third straight loss for Class 4A St. Michael (2-3).

LUTCHER, ST. JAMES GAMES IN LIMBO: A decision on whether Lutcher and St. James will play or postpone their respective games because of Tropical Storm Karen is expected early Friday.
Lutcher coach Tim Detillier said Emergency Preparedness and St. James Parish officials are scheduled to meet Friday morning to make a final decision. Lutcher (1-3) is scheduled to host East Ascension (4-0) for a nondistrict game, while St. James (0-4, 0-1) is set to host Fisher (0-3, 0-1) for District 8-2A game.
Detillier said there is a chance his game could be moved up to 6 p.m. or delayed until Sunday.
The plan is much the same for Fisher-St. James. SJHS coach Dwain James said the two schools are set for a conference call. Moving the game up two hours or moving it to Sunday are options.
“We’re supposed to have a conference call at 8 a.m. with Fisher,” Jenkins said. “We’re going to let things (weather wise) play out through the night and take it from there.”
