Maracalin goes over 1,000 yards in Plaquemine victory

Plaquemine started fast and then had plenty of cushion to hold off a fourth-quarter surge as the Green Devils easily got past Southern Lab 49-28 at Louisiana Leadership’s Doug Williams Stadium.

Plaquemine (4-1) scored on six of its first seven possessions, and led 42-14 after three periods. Southern Lab (0-5) scored twice in the fourth quarter but had dug too deep of a hole.

“I wish we’d done a better job on defense as far as closing out the game. You have to give Southern Lab credit,” Plaquemine coach Paul Distefano said. “They never quit.”

Plaquemine’s Julius Maracalin ran 25 times for 131 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Green Devils rushing attack. Maracalin pushed his season yardage total to 1,025.

Quarterback D’Morea Wicks completed 6 of 7 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown, and he also ran eight times for 82 yards and another score.

“I was proud of the fact that we were able to spread the ball around. We did a better job on our passing game,” Distefano said after five Green Devils caught passes.

Lab’s pass-catch combination of quarterback Bladrick Veal and Derrick Pate heated up late to account for both fourth-quarter scores. Veal was 26 of 41 for 259 yards, while Pate finished with 10 catches for 126 yards.

Plaquemine raced to a 21-0 first-quarter lead.

The Green Devils special teams got a break on Southern Lab’s first possession when a low snap rolled through the legs of punter Deion Rainey. Plaquemine took over at the SLS 15 and scored in four plays.

Maracalin’s 1-yard score made it 7-0 with 8:51 to go in the first.

Plaquemine went 93 yards in five plays on its next possession. The Green Devils were aided by a 5-yard facemask penalty after Maracalin’s 14-yard run. Two plays later Wicks found Louis Conerly behind the Lab defense at the SLS 40, and he sprinted in for a 59-yard touchdown.

Lab failed to handle Plaquemine’s ensuing squib kickoff, and Orlando Batiste recovered the ball at the SLS 43.

This time, Lab’s defense stiffened as Plaquemine faced a fourth-and-11. Undaunted, Wicks took care of business again weaving his way for a 44-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw.

Plaquemine burned 4:40 off the clock with a 12-play, 58-yard drive to take a 28-0 lead. Maracalin capped the drive with a 1-yard run.

Lab responded with an 11-play drive highlighted by six Veal completions. Michael Henderson’s 1-yard run made it 28-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Plaquemine wasted no time extending the lead.

The Green Devils took the kickoff and used nine plays to go 70 yards. Louis Conerly directed the drive and found Joseph Keller for a 4-yard touchdown.

Lab fought back with Veal’s 6-yard pass to Tevis Abraham, who finished with seven receptions for 92 yards.
