Denham Springs set to take on Catholic

After beating the fourth-ranked team in Class 4A, Denham Springs High School will step up to play the No. 6 team in 5A. But there will be no mystery surrounding this one.

DSHS (1-1) and sixth-ranked Catholic High (2-0) will meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Olympia Stadium to highlight an intriguing list of Week 3 football games in the Baton Rouge area.

“I’ve always said that Catholic High is the measuring stick for teams in Baton Rouge,” Denham Springs coach Dru Nettles said. “Ever since Dale Weiner has been the coach at Catholic, they’ve been the most consistently successful program in this area. And if you can play with them, you can usually play with just about anybody.”

DSHS lost its season opener to Woodlawn, but bounced back with a 21-12 victory over fourth-ranked Salmen, of 4A, in Week 2. Matt Erwin threw two touchdown passes and Anthony Bracy ran for 102 yards on 26 carries for the Yellow Jackets last week.

Catholic, meanwhile, edged Mandeville 16-13 in its Week 2 game also played at Olympia. The game matches teams from the area’s two 5A districts against each other.

Most of the other Week 3 games in Class 5A/4A feature matchups with teams from New Orleans and other areas.

All games are set for Friday, making this the first high school football-free Thursday night.

The list of Friday matchups features some interesting angles. For example, Central (2-0) hosts Jesuit (1-1), the New Orleans school Central coach Sid Edwards coached for one season.

Jesuit vs. Central is one of several BR-New Orleans crossover games. Dutchtown (2-0) hosts Destrehan (2-0), a one-time district rival in another all-5A game.

Several crossover games include teams from different classifications. This list includes 2A East Feliciana (1-1) at Zachary (1-1), 4A Belaire (0-2) at 5A Broadmoor (1-1) and 5A Live Oak (1-1) vs. 4A St. Michael (2-0). The LOHS-SMHS contest will be played at Louisiana Leadership’s Doug Williams Stadium.

Another BR-N.O. crossover is 3A St. Charles Catholic (1-1) at East Ascension (2-0).

Several teams will travel outside the area for the first time this week. That list includes McKinley (1-1) at Opelousas (0-2), St. Amant (1-1) at H.L. Bourgeois (0-2), and Walker (1-1) at Pineville (2-0).

Third-ranked University (2-0) helps lead the list of small schools games. The Cubs host LaGrange (0-2) on Friday night. Two rivalries also are notable.

Class 1A White Castle (2-0) hosts 3A Donaldsonville (1-1) in a matchup of teams located a few miles apart on Highway 1.

“We’re playing pretty well right now,” White Castle coach Lamar Thomas said. “The main thing we’re looking to do is develop some depth on our offensive and defensive lines.

“I think this is a game that’s good for both schools. We’re neighbors. All the kids know each other. Some of them have cousins on the other team.”

Sunday’s games

Two Class 1A games postponed from Friday are set for Sunday.

Madison Prep (0-1) plays at Istrouma (0-1) at 5 p.m. East Iberville (1-0) hosts Christian Life (0-1) at 5:30 p.m.
