East edges West in prep girls soccer all-star game

LAFAYETTE — In a game that featured some big swings in momentum, the East team edged the West 3-2 in the Louisiana High School Soccer Coaches Association/Louisiana High School Coaches Association girls soccer all-star game Saturday.

The East, coached by East Ascension’s Chris Goodall, led 1-0 at halftime thanks to a goal from former Mount Carmel standout Caitlyn Robert.

The momentum shifted swiftly to the West as Vandebilt’s Makelle Pena scored two goals in the first four minutes of the second half for a 2-1 West lead.

With about 16 minutes left, Robert scored a goal to tie it at 2-2.

The clincher for the East came on a goal by Shelby Smith of Cabrini with about four left. Goodall described the shot as a “rocket” from about 35 yards out.

Goodall said it was enjoyable experience for his team.

“The girls mission accomplished: They had a lot of fun,” Goodall said. “The Baton Rouge metro area gave a super account of themselves.”

East goalkeepers Faith Washington and Rachel Bourgeois registered nine and three saves.

Goalkeeper for the West were Hahnville’s Kristal Breaux (six saves) and St. Thomas More’s Katherine Werther (four saves).

Goodall also said a Baton Rouge-based group officiated the game.
