Advocate’s Star of Stars banquet set Tuesday

The 28th Athlete of the Year/Star of Stars banquet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Advocate’s administrative offices located at 7290 Bluebonnet Blvd.

Twenty-four athletes in 15 high school sports from the Baton Rouge area will be honored during the annual event along with the Athlete of Year winners.

The Advocate announced the Athlete of the Year finalists on Monday.

St. Joseph’s Academy’s Morgan Miller, St. Amant’s Toni Rodriguez and Plaquemine’s Amber Smith are the girls finalists. Brennan Bozeman of Parkview Baptist, Darian Claiborne of Port Allen and Marquise Ricard of Southern Lab are the boys finalists. All six athletes were multi-sport standouts in 2012-13.

Tuesday’s banquet also will mark the first time that powerlifters are honored. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association added powerlifting as a sanctioned event in 2012-13.

Dutchtown’s Landon Collins, now a football player at the Alabama, was the 2012 boys Athlete of the Year winner. West Feliciana’s Britney Washington was the 2012 girls Athlete of the Year winner. Washington now plays basketball at Southern University.
