May 5, 2013 00:43 Home runs power Catholic past Lafayette Home runs power Catholic past Lafayette Advocate staff report May 05, 2013 Comments LAFAYETTE — Connor Whalen and Austin Devillier hit home runs, while Ross Massey got the victory to help Catholic High School notch a 5-2 victory over Lafayette in Class 5A bidistrict baseball playoff action at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Tigue Moore Field Tuesday night. Whalen finished 2-for-2 at the plate for the Bears (22-12), who advance to play the Acadiana-Jesuit winner in the regional round. Devillier and Andrew Fournet both finished 1-for-2. Massey (6-2) scattered seven hits for Catholic, a No. 21 seed. Andrew Eister (2-for-3, double) and Antoine Duplantis (1-for-3) were among the leaders for 12th-seeded Lafayette (21-12). FAMILY CHRISTIAN 12, CALVIN 0: In Calvin, Family Christian wrapped up a berth in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s Class C tournament in Sulphur as Ben Chauvin (9-2) and MJ Frazier combined on a five-inning perfect game. Mason Diaz was 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in the for the top-seeded Flames (24-4). Titus Rogers (2-for-3, double, RBI) and Michael Hopkins (2-for-3, 2 doubles, 2 RBIs) were other FCA leaders. Calvin finishes 11-8. BRUSLY 16, BUCKEYE 5: In Buckeye, 11th-seeded Brusly pounded out 16 hits en route to Class 3A regional win with Cameron Willis leading the way. Willis was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Panthers (25-7), who scored six runs in the first inning. Kwanscan Adkins (3-for-3, two RBIs), Cullen Prejean (3-for-4, 2 triples, 2 RBIs) and Lannon Andre (3-for-4, double, RBI) also were key contributors to BHS’ potent offense. Buckeye, the No. 6 seed, finishes 27-3. ST. JOHN 4, ST. FREDERICK 3: In Plaquemine, St. John scored the winning win in the bottom of the sixth inning in its Class 1A regional victory. Seth Gulotta was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the sixth-seeded Eagles (27-6), who advance to play No. 14 Westminster Christian in the quarterfinals later this week. Trevor Curry (1-for2, 1 RBI) and Chris Patin (1-for-3) also led SJHS. Morgan Booksh (1-1) got the win. Losing pitcher Paul Whipple (8-2) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs to pace Monroe-based St. Frederick. DERIDDER 6, ST. MICHAEL 5: In DeRidder, host DHS scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to post a come-from-behind win in Class 4A regional action. Devon Jones (6-3) picked up the win for the seventh-seedes Dragons. J.J. Faciane was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI to pace the winners (28-7). John Mauldin had a home run and was 1-for-3 at the plate for St. Michael (22-12). ROSEPINE 3, EPISCOPAL 2: At EHS, ninth-seeded Rosepine (26-4) scratched out runs in three separate innings to end Episcopal’s season in Class 2A regional action. Brennan Folse finished 4-for-4 at the plate to pace the Knights (12-18). Matt Clark (1-for-3, RBI) and Chris Beckman (1-for-3, double) and Turner Graham (1-for-3, home run) also led EHS. Games rescheduled Tuesday’s rains forced several teams to push their games back to Wednesday. In Class 5A. Denham Springs will host Captain Shreve at 4 p.m. in North Park. In Class 3A, Parkview Baptist will host St. Charles Catholic at 6 p.m. Meanwhile, in Class 2A, University High hosts Sterlington at 4 p.m.
