Robin Fambrough | Advocate sportswriter April 03, 2013 Comments Madison Prep standout Jarell Martin and MPA coach Jeffery Jones are headed to the Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic set for April 19 in Louisville, Ky. The 6-foot-9 Martin, who will play in next week’s McDonald’s All-American game, is one of three McDonald’s All-Americans set to participate in the 40th Derby Classic. Current LSU player and Kentucky native Anthony Hickey played in the Derby Classic previously. Jones will coach the White Team that will include Martin and another LSU signee, 6-8 Jordan Mickey from Dallas-based Prime Prep. Martin led Madison to the Class B state title earlier this month and averaged 26.3 points and 14.8 rebounds per game. Wednesday’s track Two track meets, Port Allen’s John Williams Relays and Dutchtown’s Health Quest Physical Therapy Invitational, are set for Wednesday at the respective schools. The Williams Relays begin at 2 p.m. with field events at PAHS. Running events are set for 4 p.m. Teams entered include host Port Allen, Hahnville, Tara, Lutcher, Family Christian, Catholic-Pointe Coupee, Northeast and McKinley. Field events at Dutchtown start at 3:30 p.m. with running events to follow at 5:30 p.m. Teams entered include host DHS, Catholic High, Zachary, East Ascension, St. Amant, Donaldsonville, Ascension Catholic, Runnels, Baker, Dominican, Ursuline and St. Michael. They’re committed Broadmoor High two-way lineman Michael Vick Jr. and Central High receiver Jeremy Anderson are the latest Baton Rouge area athletes with college football-related announcements. Vick is set to be a preferred football walk-on at Southeastern Louisiana University. A four-year BHS starter and an All-District 6-4A selection, Vick signed a letter of commitment to the Lions, but his commitment wasn’t released to the media until this week. Anderson, a three-year regular for Central and an All-District 4-5A pick, has committed to football at Division III Mississippi College located in Clinton, Miss. Officials needed The River Parish Football Officials Association seeks new officials for the 2013 high school season. Weekly meetings will be held at 7 p.m. each Tuesday at Riverside Academy located in Reserve through May 14. Those interested must be at least 18 and either have a high school diploma or a GED. Woodruff, of the Istrouma Baptist Church sports program, is planning the group’s annual Dominican Republic baseball trip June 30-July 6. Players who have completed grades eight through 12 are eligible to participate. Five games against Dominican-based teams are scheduled. Players will also participate in two clinics for younger players. There will be group Bible studies and worship each day as the players stay in Boca Chica at the S.C.O.R.E/Rawlings Complex. The cost is $1,200, which includes airfare, transportation and lodging. A $600 deposit is due April 1. The balance is due May 30.
