LHSAA sanctions N .O.-based Clark

The Louisiana High School Athletic Association released sanctions against New Orleans-based J.S. Clark High School, including fines of $5,200 for rules violations in three sports: football, boys basketball and girls basketball.

LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson was out of the office and unavailable for comment Tuesday. Classes at Clark were not in session Tuesday because of the Mardi Gras holidays.

Violations in all three sports were reported by a member of the LHSAA’s school compliance team.

The largest fine of $3,600 was assessed for scholastic violations in football. The LHSAA’s notice of rule violation and assessment of penalty report shows Clark allegedly played 10 athletes who were academically inelgible.

In addition to the fine, the Class 2A school was ordered to forfeit a football win to W.L. Cohen and was placed on administrative probation. Underclassmen involved in the sanctions will be required to sit out the number of games they played in last fall in 2013.

Clark football coach Terry Freeman will be required to attend the next scheduled LHSAA handbook certification class and complete the LHSAA/National Federation of High School Associations online fundamentals of coaching class.

The Clark boys basketball program was fined $1,200 also for scholastic violations and also placed on administrative probation. The school was ordered to forfeit wins over Sophie B. Wright and Thomas Jefferson. Boys basketball coach Marcell Fisher also will be required to compete the handbook and coaching fundamentals class.

Boys basketball players involved in the sanctions will be required to sit out seven games once they meet academic eligibility standards.

A violation of the LHSAA’s transfer rules was cited for girls basketball, resulting in a $400 fine. The Clark girls basketball team also was required to forfeit wins over Sarah Reed and L.W. Higgins and placed on administrative probation.

The student involved must sit out one calendar year from her date of enrollment at Clark, plus four games next season. Clark girls basketball coach Sylvia Atkinson also will be required to complete handbook and coaching fundamentals classes.
