Nov 16, 2012 13:45 Prep basketball jamborees, signings set for Wednesday Prep basketball jamborees, signings set for Wednesday Advocate staff report Nov. 16, 2012 Comments The start of the NCAA’s early signing period and the tip off of the high school basketball season for teams in Classes 5A to 1A are both set for Wednesday. One of the area’s most celebrated seniors, Madison Prep basketball standout and LSU commitment Jarell Martin, has not finalized his signing plans yet. However, East Ascension softball outfielder Bailey Landry, is set to sign with the LSU on Wednesday. As a junior, Landry hit .489 for the Spartans with six home runs, 27 RBIs and 31 stolen bases. Landry was the first Louisiana commitment for LSU coach Beth Torina and will sign in a ceremony set for 9 a.m. at the school. A boys basketball player, one other softball player and three girls basketball players have signing ceremonies set for Wednesday. Meanwhile, the 5A to 1A jamboree season starts with girls jamboree at St. Joseph’s Academy and Capitol on Wednesday. A total of nine schools will host either boys or coed jamborees on Thursday. Set to sign St. Amant High softball pitcher Kasey Nielson will sign with Southeastern Louisiana University during a ceremony at her school at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Episcopal’s Mary Melissa Hoover is one of three girls basketball players set to sign. Hoover will sign with Appalachian State at 3:30 p.m. at the school, just before her team’s departure for the St. Joseph’s Academy Jamboree. St. Michael the Archangel’s Taylor Morrison and Journee Beard are set to sign. Morrison (Nicholls State) and Beard (University of Louisiana at Monroe) are set to sign in the school’s library at 8:30 a.m. Scotlandville basketball standout Damien Jones is set to sign with Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. in the school library. Also, Ascension Catholic’ baseball player Hunter Medine is scheduled to sign with the University of New Orleans at 1 p.m. Thursday at school. A pitcher-outfielder, Medine earned All-District 9-1A honors the last two years. Jamborees The St. Joseph’s Academy Jamboree is set to begin at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday and will feature the host Redstickers and eight other teams. Capitol’s Ladies Night Jamboree is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and includes six girls teams. Thursday’s list of jamborees includes boys-girls events at Donaldsonville, Doyle, Port Allen, Plaquemine, St. Amant and West Feliciana. McKinley, Tara and Walker will host Thursday jamborees for boys teams. Defending 5A state champion Scotlandville is set to compete at McKinley.
