Sunday deadline to submit Red Stick Bowl nominations

All Baton Rouge area schools are reminded that Sunday is the deadline for head coaches to submit their nominations for the 2012 U.S. Army Red Stick Bowl football all-star game.

Head football coaches are asked to nominate their top senior players for the 11th annual game that is set for 2:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at Denham Springs High.

Players can be nominated by going to www.redstickbowl.org, by fax to (225) 767-7762 or by emailing game organizer Barrett Murphy at barrettmurphy@gmail.com.

The teams will be selected during a Nov. 21 meeting at the Louisiana Department of Education’s Claiborne Building located at 1201 North Third St. All head coaches are encouraged to participate.

Recruiting, etc.

St. Amant High softball pitcher Kasey Nielson will sign with Southeastern Louisiana University in a signing ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the St. Amant High library

Nielson compiled a 23-2 record with a 1.41 earned run average as a junior.

Episcopal girls basketball player Bria Johnson and Runnels baseball player Josh Morris, have also committed to sign during the NCAA’s early signing period that starts this week.

The 5-foot-10 Johnson committed to Auburn. She averaged 16 points and 6.5 rebounds a game as a junior.

Morris, a right-handed pitcher/infielder, has committed to Northwestern State. Morris has started for Runnels since he was an eighth-grader and is a two-time All0-Metro selection.

Metro meetings set

Selection meetings for Baton Rouge’s All-Metro cross country and volleyball teams will be Nov. 28 at different sites.

Coaches will meet to select boys and girls cross country teams at 4 p.m. in the Episcopal coaches office. The large schools and small schools volleyball teams will be picked at 6 p.m. meeting at Team Sportsplex located on Perkins Rd. adjacent to BREC’s Olympia Stadium.

Umpires meeting

The Capital City Baseball Umpires Association will hold their first meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Broadmoor High library.

All veteran umpires and anyone interested in becoming a high school baseball umpire are urged to attend. Umpires will be registered for the 2013 season during this meeting.

Prep notables

Former Episcopal football player Tylor Harris has earned a starting role at Wake Forest as a true freshman. Harris is a defensive lineman who had 15 total tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Two boys basketball coaches with local ties have started the 2012-13 season in different places. Longtime Plaquemine High coach Denny Wright is now the head coach for Class C Grand Isle. Former Christian Life coach Carlo Maggio is the head boys basketball coach at Class 2A Oberlin.
