BAKER — The Baker fans started to sense a momentum swing when their homestanding Buffaloes cut the lead to 21-6 with nearly nine minutes left in the third quarter.
However, Parkview Baptist emphatically removed any hopes for a second-half comeback.
Class 3A’s top-ranked Eagles (6-0, 2-0 District 6-3A) scored 21 unanswered points to close the third quarter and cruise to a 49-20 victory at Wedge Keys Stadium.
“I think we’re playing really well right now offensively and defensively,” Eagles coach Kenny Guillot said. “I think that’s important heading into these next few games. You always want to be improving every week.”
Parkview led 14-0 at halftime and added more points as Erik Martinez scooted 55 yards for a touchdown at the 11:04 mark, increase the Eagles’ lead to 21-0.
Baker (0-6, 0-2 District 6-3A) shook off the long play and responded quickly. A 72-yard run by Rashaun Curtis run set up Michael Gosserand’s 2-yard touchdown plunge, cutting the PBHS lead to 21-6 with 9:34 left in the third quarter.
The Eagles switched gears from quick-hitting to methodical on their next drive, which began at their 40-yard line. Parkview pounded Conner Hodgeson between the tackles five straight times to get Parkview Baptist within the Baker 34-yard line. Quarterback Brennan Bozeman followed with a 24-yard run to near the Buffaloes 11. The Eagles offense capped the drive on the next play as Bozeman threw a quick pass to Martinez, and Martinez stuck the ball over the goal line for the score, giving PBHS a 27-6 lead at the 6:02 mark in the third.
“They’re like a well-tuned machine,” Baker coach Richard Oliver said. “With that little wrinkle he (Guillot) has, they can be dangerous. You’re more effective when you’re balanced. They can throw it and run it.”
The Eagles defense had a huge hand in Parkview’s next two scores. Parkview Baptist defenders stripped Curtis of the ball and turned it into a scoop-and-score touchdown to increase the lead to 35-6 with 5:44 left in the quarter. The Eagles followed that up with Tee Sparrow stripping Darrius Neff and giving the Eagles possession at the Baker 4-yard line at the 4:40 mark.
The Eagles cashed in on Hezekiah Randolph’s 1-yard run to make it a 42-6 margin with 4:04 left in the third.
“Going into the half, we felt good with the game plan that we had,” Oliver said. “Coming out of halftime, we had some good things happen. Then we had the two turnovers, and we kind of spotted them 14 points.”
Baker tacked on two scores in the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-7 near the Eagles’ 45, Treylon Anderson hit Gosserand for a short pass, and Gosserand escaped the defenders and raced to a 45-yard touchdown with 11:03 remaining. Gosserand followed that up later in the fourth, taking a handoff right, then cutting back across the field for a 60-yard score.
“Baker played a heck of a football game tonight,” Guillot said. “They’ve got a nice little scheme they put in the last couple of weeks and coach has done a great job with them. They played hard.”
