Scotlandville coach Eric Randall said his football team is still jelling, but if the Hornets’ game ever reaches their coach’s satisfaction, they will be a very impressive force.
The big play Hornets gave Randall another major leg up on his return to coaching with a 48-34 win over Zachary at Scotlandville on Friday night. After a sluggish start they ran up 568 yards of total offense and scored 42 points in the final three quarters of the battle between two of the area’s most explosive offenses..
Running back Dontrell Hilliard led the offensive onslaught with 212 yards on
21 carries, while Darion Williams (130 yards) and Orrin Butler (107) both went over the 100-yard mark for Scotlandville (4-2, 2-0 in District 4-5A).
“The offense line gets the game ball tonight,” Randall said, running down his list of starters.
“You’ve got Jeremy Wade, Jeremy Williams, David Colligan, La’Allen Clark and Nicholas Brown. We really challenged them this week.
“And I thought our quarterback did an awesome job of managing the football game tonight. He threw the ball well. And we didn’t have any turnovers. We protected the ball well.”
It took the teams a few minutes to get untracked in the first half, but when they did the points came rolling in.
Zachary (4-3, 0-2) opened with a 61-yard drive, but the Hornets overcame a costly offsides penalty on their own nine-yard line to hold the Broncos on downs at the four.
Scotlandville then mounted a long drive to notch the first score of the game.
Quarterback Darion Williams and running back Dontrell Hilliard sparked the offense with runs of 23 and 21 runs, and Williams finished with a 21-yard TD pass to Larry Clark.
The second Scotlandville score came on a short field drive, courtesy of an interception by Leon Alexander.
Hilliard got his first touchdown of the night on a 4-yard run.
Zachary got on the scoreboard with 9:27 left in the second quarter, but Scotlandville answered with another Hilliard touchdown run.
Then, after Boston Scott pulled the Broncos within seven again, Williams connected with A’Darian Northern for a 51-yard touchdown.
“They were more physical, and they wanted it more than we did,” Zachary coach Neil Weiner said.
“They got two easy ones where we busted assignments, but, shoot, we gave up four other ones where we just didn’t do a very good job of playing football.”
Both teams started the second half with failed attempts on fourth down conversion, but then the offensive display began again.
Hilliard would score on runs of 51 and 66 yards for the Hornets, and Trey Hills threw touchdown passes of 34 yards to Donald Gage and 36 yards to Kentrell Fisher for the Broncos.
Hilliard nearly had a fifth touchdown, but the football squirted free as he dived for the end zone and teammate Ryan Hubbard recovered for the touchdown.
That score put Scotlandville up 48-27 and put the game out of reach although Zachary scored the final touchdown on a pass from Hills to Justin Kinchen.
“We played a good team tonight,” Randall said. “Coach Weiner does a good job and they never quit. But you know what the difference is? We played 48 minutes tonight.
“All the credit goes to our kids. We put them through hell during the week, but they come ready to work.”
Scott rushed 24 times for 145 yards to lead the Broncos. Hills was 19 of 31 for 280 yards.
