White Castle rolls to big win over St. John

PLAQUEMINE — White Castle eclipsed the 50-point mark for the fourth consecutive game Thursday night with a 54-7 win against St. John at COPAC Stadium in a District 9-1A game.

White Castle (5-1, 2-0) ran for 379 yards and had two rushers — Robert Franklin and Tyrie Lang — reach the 100-yard mark. Each player finished with three rushing touchdowns, and Franklin added a fourth passing.

Quarterback Chris Major completed 2-of-5 passes for 55 yards.

The Bulldogs moved to 2-0 in district play with the victory, and have outscored their opponents 108-13 in the two games.

“We knew we had a chance to be good,” said White Castle coach Lamar Thomas. “We count on giving different people chances…We spread the ball around. At any given time, our kids that they’re going to have a chance to play.”

St. John (0-6, 0-2) only mustered 151 yards, all on the ground. Benjamin Poirrier led the way with 63 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Hunter Schnebelen added 35 more and had the Eagles’ only touchdown.

The loss leaves St. John still searching for its first win of the season.

“We just didn’t execute tonight,” said St. John coach Mike Dugan. “They’re a fantastic team, and they put it on us tonight. With their speed, if you gave them a crack, they took it all the way.”

St. John benefitted from good fortune on the opening kickoff that went only 10 yards. The ball deflected off a White Castle blocker, and the Eagles recovered. After a 12-yard carry by Bo Dearman, Schnebelen went 39 yards on an option keeper to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

“We knew they were going to come at us hard,” Thomas said. “Maybe throw the kitchen sink at us, and see what happens. We had to play through that adversity, and handle it well. We were able to do that.”

The Eagles nearly forced a White Castle three-and-out, but Lang scampered 27 yards to convert. The Bulldogs scored two plays later on an 11-yard touchdown run by Franklin.

White Castle then scored on its next four possessions, needing no more than five plays to score each time. Franklin scored three more times in the first half, twice rushing. He also had a TD reception from Major that went 57 yards.

Lang had the other White Castle touchdown in the first half, a 15-yard run.

After a St. John three-and-out to open the second half, Brandon Noel intercepted a deep pass by Major. The Eagles failed to capitalize though, handing White Castle the ball back at their 29-yard line.

The Bulldogs scored three plays later on a 22-yard TD run by Lang. He then added his third TD run on the next drive, this time from 3 yards out.

White Castle ate up clock in the fourth quarter with a 10-play TD drive capped off by a 2-yard run by Jordan Jones. The two-point conversion made it 54-7.
