St. Charles Catholic clips Donaldsonville; West Feliciana thumps Baker

Class 3A’s sixth-ranked St. Charles Catholic Comets upped their record to 3-2 in a commanding 50-6 victory over the Donaldsonville Tigers in the District 7-3A opener for both teams Friday night at Boutte Stadium in Donaldsonville.

Austin Weber ran 11 times for 104 yards and scored on runs covering 8, 28 and 27 yards to lead the Comets to a 43-0 halftime lead.

All of the Comets’ 285 total yards came on the ground, while its defense held Donaldsonville (1-5) to 6 rushing yards.

DHS’ Leondre James completed 21 of 34 passes for 210 yards and it was his 17-yard strike to Stephen Sullivan in the fourth quarter that put up the Tigers’ only points.

James went over the 1,000-yard mark with his effort. Through six games, James has passed for 1,144 yards on 101 completions in 178 throws.

Sullivan finished the game with 12 catches for 139 yards.

James was intercepted twice and the Comets recovered three DHS fumbles.

WEST FELICIANA 34, BAKER 6

In Baker, visiting West Feliciana Saints’ quarterback Dennis Bell and receiver Jazmond Ferguson hooked up on touchdown passes covering 43, 47 and 42 yards and Bell ran for another score to push the Saints to 5-1 for the season in the District 6-3A opener for both schools.

Bell was good on 6 of 8 passes for 173 yards and Ferguson’s three catches (all for scores) totaled 132 yards.

Deldrick Harris fumble recovery and score from the Baker 5 accounted for the Saints’ other TD.

Baker (0-6, 0-1) got a 16-carry, 131-yard rushing effort from Rashawn Curtis.

Thursday

POINTE COUPEE CENTRAL 36, OPELOUSAS CATHOLIC 24

In Opelousas, Pointe Coupee Central (3-2, 3-0) won its third straight District 6-1A game, thanks to big plays by Kevin Bourgeois, Delfontay Powell and Bryce Jones.

Bourgeois passed for three touchdowns and ran for another for the Cougars, and it was his 60-yard scoring pass to Powell that gave PCC a 29-24 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Jones scooped up an OCHS fumble, returned it 50 yards, then pitches to teammate Altonio Johnson, who scored to increase the Cougars lead with less than four minutes remaining.

Justin Guillory ran for 89 yards and one TD to lead Opelousas Catholic (4-2, 1-2). T.J. Venable added 63 rushing yards and a TD for OCHS.
