New time, stadium
Catholic-Pointe Coupee has pushed back the start of its District 6-1A game with St. Edmund to 7:30 p.m. because of pregame ceremonies for the first game at New Roads’ new Community Park Stadium.
The new stadium was built just 500 yards from the previous stadium that was the site of games for about 50 years. The new stadium features berm seating and other updated features, including a new press box and concession stand, said CHSPC coach Rob Funderburk.
Tourney to resume
Silliman Institute’s softball team looks to complete its quest for the overall Class 2A Mississippi Association of Independent School fastpitch title on Wednesday.
The Wildcats (40-2) meet Canton Academy in an elimination game at 8:45 a.m. at Liberty Park located in Flowood, Miss. Silliman would have to play at least two more games after the Canton game in order to claim a title.
The Clinton-based Wildcats entered the tourney as the top team from the South area after winning the South State 2A title and took a 9-1 win over Prairie View Academy on Saturday before rain postponed the event.
A showdown with North champion Leake Academy is expected. Silliman snapped Leake’s 85-game winning streak earlier in the season.
Monroe gains tourney
The Louisiana High School Athletic Association announced in a news release that the University of Louisiana-Monroe’s Warhawk Stadium will be the site of its Class 2A-1A state baseball tourney next spring.
The tourney is set for May 10-11 and will be hosted by the Monroe-West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau. The LHSAA reached an agreement with the Monroe group last week. The tourney was originally scheduled to be in Ruston/Louisiana Tech, the site of the 2012 tourney. A scheduling conflict in Ruston prompted the move to Monroe.
“We are extremely excited to work with the Monroe-West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau to bring the 2013 1A and 2A state baseball championships to the northeast section of our state,” LHSAA Executive Director Kenny Henderson said in the news release. “We would like to thank them for their continued support of LHSAA championship events and are thrilled to have them host two days of exciting high school baseball finals.”
Tigers set for Friday
The Dunham School (3-2) will host Capitol (1-4) for its District 7-2A football opener on Friday, not Thursday.
Some schedules listed the game as a Thursday game because the teams played on a Thursday last season when Capitol was the host school. Dunham seeks its third straight win.
Getting defensive
Plaquemine held Tara to minus-5 yards of total offense, including minus-18 rushing yards in a 28-0 win last week.
Julius Maracalin ran for 109 yards on 21 carries and scored one touchdown for the Green Devils. Ricky Aro also ran for two TDs, and Jaron Hooks returned a fumble for a TD for PHS.
