Prep notes: Runnels’ Julie Fink up for honor

A second local coach, Runnels’ Julie Fink, is also one of 25 finalists for the Brooks Inspiring Coach Award.

Fink is the Raiders’ head coach for boys and girls cross country. She also serves as the assistant track and field coach.

Like Catholic High head cross country and track coach Pete Boudreaux, Fink has received $5,000 in Brooks equipment, along with
$500 for additional team expenses.

Fink and Boudreaux are now eligible to win the Brooks overall prize that will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Cox4 schedules set

Cox4 has announced its Game of the Week high school football broadcast schedule for the fall, which includes games in Baton Rouge,
New Orleans and the Acadiana area.

Action will begin on Aug. 24 with Cox4 showing the Coca-Cola Kickoff Classic jamboree games from Woodlawn High.

Other local games to note include Redemptorist at Parkview Baptist on Sept. 14, Destrehan at Dutchtown on Sept. 28 and Port Allen at
St. Charles Catholic on Oct. 12.

Former LSU quarterback Rohan Davey will be joining the local Cox4 crew as a color analyst, according to a Cox news release.

Almost done

Thanks to a tremendous response from local and area coaches over the past two weeks,

The Advocate has almost all the high school football questionnaires needed to put together its fall football preview.

However, there are still a few schools we are trying to track down information on. So coaches shouldn’t be surprised if they get a call from one of our writers in the days ahead.

Coach updates

Former White Castle player Troy Green has been selected as the Bulldogs’ new head coach.

Green, who coached Class 3A Donaldsonville High to a 20-11 record in 2011-12, takes over for his high school coach, Ronald Johnson.

After leading Class 1A White Castle High School to a state title in 2011 and a runner-up finish in 2012, Johnson retired.

  • McKinney Evans, previously a head football coach at Istrouma, North Iberville and Scotlandville, is now an assistant coach at Woodlawn High.

Meanwhile, former Glen Oaks head coach and former Woodlawn assistant Gary Burnett is now an assistant at Denham Springs High.

  • Baton Rouge is not the only area in which head football coaches were appointed late.

Jerry Byrd, most recently the defensive coordinator at Loyola Prep, took over at North Caddo last week.

It is the second stint at North Caddo for Byrd, who also was a head coach Huntington and North Soto. He led North Caddo to a 9-3 record in 2003.

Prep notable

Former Barbe-Lake Charles shortstop Gavin Chechini hit his first professional home run, a grand slam, for Class A Kingsport, Tenn., in a game against Bristol played on Saturday, according to longtime Morning Advocate Prep Editor Ted Castillo.

Chechini led Barbe to the Class 5A state title this spring and was Louisiana’s Mr. Baseball.

He was a first-round pick of the New York Mets last month.
