Star of Stars set for Monday
The announcement of two major award winners will highlight The Advocate’s 27th Star of Stars awards banquet that is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Six finalists are in contention for the 2012 Athlete of the Year awards.
The annual banquet will be held at The Advocate’s administrative offices located at 7290 Bluebonnet Blvd.
Former Baton Rouge Magnet High track star Dominique Brisco, now of the University of Houston, was the 2011 girls winner. LSU defensive back Ronald Martin, a former White Castle High standout, was the 2011 boys winner.
In addition to honoring its Athlete of the Year winners, The Advocate sports and marketing departments will also honor the Star of Stars for 2011-12 in 14 different sports.
Donaldsonville High’s Devon Breaux, Dutchtown’s Landon Collins and Episcopal’s Vincent Dellocono are the 2012 boys finalists. St. Amant High’s Toni Rodriguez, West Feliciana’s Britney Washington and Hosanna Christian’s Laticia Watson are the girls finalists.
Five of the six finalists are seniors. Washington and Dellocono were both finalists in 2011.
Breaux, a Tulane football signee, starred in football, basketball and track and field for Class 3A Donaldsonville. Collins, an Alabama football signee, excelled in both football and track for 5A Dutchtown. Dellocono made his mark in football, basketball and baseball for 2A Episcopal.
Rodriguez, a sophomore at Class 5A St. Amant, is the only non-senior in the group and she was a standout in volleyball, basketball and track. Washington and Watson also distinguished themselves in volleyball, basketball and track at 3A West Feliciana and Class B Hosanna, respectively.
