Thomas, Watson college signees

Scotlandville High basketball player Cleveland Thomas and Hosanna Christian track and field standout Laticia Watson top the list of recent college signees from the Baton Rouge Metro area.

Thomas, who led the Hornets to the Class 5A state title in March, signed with the University of New Mexico, said Scotlandville coach Carlos Sample.

In November, Thomas signed with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette but was later released from that commitment. Thomas averaged 18 points and eight rebounds per game for the Hornets and was selected as the 5A title-game MVP and boys Top 28 tourney MVP, the Class 5A MVP by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association and was The Advocate’s All-Metro MVP.

Watson, a finalist for The Advocate’s Athlete of the Year award, signed to continue her track career at Louisiana Tech.

As a senior, Watson was voted the Outstanding Girls Performer during the Class B portion of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Track Meet. She set meet records while winning the triple jump in 37 feet, 3 1/4 inches, the 300 hurdles in 46.64 seconds and tied the record in the 100 hurdles in 15.94 seconds. She also won the long jump (17-6).

Ascension Christian softball player Chrissy Swanson is scheduled to sign with Louisiana College this week. Swanson will be the school’s first softball signee.

Troy Davis of Ascension Christian has accepted an invitation to be a walk-on basketball player at Northwestern State, said ACH coach and athletic director Will Stone.

NISCA honors Bears

Four Catholic High swimmers have received All-America honors from the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association, based on marks recorded last fall, according to a school news release.

The Bears’ Grant Grenfell was honored among the top 100 finishers in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke. Grenfell, an LSU signee,
made the list at No. 52 in the butterfly and No. 54 in the backstroke.

Catholic’s 200-yard medley relay team of Grenfell, Colin Finnegan, Chris Cazenave and Alec Vicknair was honored for recording the nation’s 93rd best mark.

Outreach trip set

The Istrouma Sports Organization, a ministry of the Istrouma Baptist Church, is sponsoring a baseball mission trip to the Dominican Republic from July 16-21 for high school-aged players.

Players who recently graduated and those entering the ninth grade this fall are eligible along with those who will be returning to high school in the fall.

The St. Amant High volleyball team will conduct its summer camp from June 18-20. The incorrect dates were listed in The Advocate’s camps directory that was published in Thursday’s editions.

Prep notables

Former Maurepas High standout Kade Scivicque earned All-Mississippi honors as a freshman for the Southwest Community College baseball team.

Scivicque, a pitcher-catcher, led the Bears in hitting with a .333 average, 10 doubles, five home runs and 27 RBIs. He
also had a .515 slugging percentage.

• Phillip Hicks of Jesuit-New Orleans was voted the Gatorade Louisiana Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

Hicks was a star defender who helped Jesuit win the Division I state title this spring. He is now among the candidates for the National Gatorade award.

• Class 5A baseball champion Barbe-Lake Charles was fined $500 by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association for “prohibited items” following last Sunday’s state tourney.

The sanctions did not involve illegal equipment. Sanctions were instead based on the fact that water was poured on the turf field at Tulane’s Greer Field-Turchin Stadium following the title game win over Archbishop Rummel, a violation of ground rules given to the teams by Tulane officials.
