Maurepas falls 1-0 in C title game

SULPHUR — Maurepas tried to produce some more last-at-bat magic Saturday night in the Class C state championship game at the LHSAA state softball tournament.

Hackberry’s Jolie Trahan wouldn’t allow it. Trahan struck out 12 and drove in the game’s only run as the Lady Mustangs repeated as state champs with a 1-0 win at Frash Park.

“We haven’t faced pitching like that all year in Class C,” said Maurepas coach Amanda Henley, whose team finished 21-7 despite having just three seniors.

Trahan recorded strikeouts in each inning and recorded at least two strikeouts in four innings. She allowed just two hits.

“I kind of expect them to win,” said Hackberry coach Angie Little. “I’ve been nervous the last two weeks. We haven’t played since April 10 (before Friday’s quarterfinal game).

Hackberry scored 10 runs in quarterfinal and semifinals wins. Yet, Ali McCoy held Hackberry (25-3) to four hits and walked just one.

“We hung in there with defense,” said Henley.

Hackberry scored its run in the bottom of the second. D.J. Simon walked to lead off and stole second. Trahan followed with a double to left field.

Maurepas missed a chance to tie the score in the fourth when Kaitlyn Carroll was thrown out at home for the third out after hesitating while rounding third.

“With two outs, you have to run and don’t stop,” said Henley. “She made a mistake.”

In their 4-3 semifinal victory over Calvin earlier Saturday, the Lady Wolves scored four runs in the top of the seventh to erase a 2-0 deficit.

Against Hackberry, they put runners on second and third with two outs, but Trahan got Brynn LeBourgeois swinging to end the game.

“There was no doubt in my mind,” Henley said about whether her team would score. “We’re fighters. That’s the thing about a young team. They don’t know any better.”
