Brusly, SJA lose in extra innings
SULPHUR — Brusly High and St. Joseph’s Academy both lost extra-inning games during Saturday’s semifinals at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s State Softball Tournament.
Taylor Edwards’ two-RBI hit in the top of the ninth inning gave Sam Houston a 2-0 victory over St. Joseph’s in Class 5A action.
In Class 3A, Buckeye had three RBI hits and a sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning on the way to a 4-0 win over Brusly.
The Baton Rouge area’s other 5A team, St. Amant, also lost its bid to advance. The Gators committed eight errors in a 10-3 loss to defending state champion Hahnville. All games were played at Frasch Park.
SAM HOUSTON 2, ST. JOSEPH’S 0: SJA’s Caroline Sagrera and SHHS’ Baylee Corbello were locked in a pitchers’ duel. Corbello allowed only one hit for the eighth-seeded Broncos’ (21-4) and struck out 17.
Sagrera finished with 10 strikeouts for the fifth-seeded Redstickers, who reached the semifinals for the first time. She allowed four hits.
Kristen Courville’s single in the fourth was the lone SJA hit.
Both pitchers allowed just one hit through eight innings. Sam Houston’s Brooke Rozas and Corbello opened the ninth inning with singles. Edwards’ single then scored both runs.
BUCKEYE 4, BRUSLY 0: Third-seeded Buckeye (25-2) had 11 hits as Mikayla Brown dueled Brusly’s Carli Jo Leblanc.
Second-seeded Brusly (29-5) had runners in scoring position in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Buckeye got four runners to third base before scoring its winning runs. Each time, Leblanc got a strikeout to end the inning. She finished with eight strikeouts.
Buckeye loaded the bases with one out in the 10th. Lacie Nugent’s sacrifice fly scored the first run.
Paris Hernandez, Destiny Dauzat and Hannah Roberts followed with run-scoring singles for Buckeye.
Brown finished 2-for-4 at the plate, while Nugent and Roberts were 2-for-5 for the winners.
Chloe Richard, who was 2-for-3, was the only Brusly player with more than one hit.
HAHNVILLE 10, ST. AMANT 3: Leadoff hitter Courtney Dutreix scored three runs and had a home run to help No. 3 Hahnville run away from second-seeded St. Amant. The Tigers (31-2) broke the game open with four runs in the fourth, including Dutreix’s home run.
Hayley Lavigne had an RBI double for the Gators (26-4), who out-hit Hahnville 7-6. Allison Hope had a single and scored a run for SAHS.
Semifinal notes
Parkview Baptist’s Brooklyn Guillot pitched a no-hitter, striking out 12 in a 10-0 victory over Iowa in the other Class 3A semifinal.
Catholic-Pointe Coupee pulled off the biggest upset. The 13th-seeded Hornets upset top-seeded Opelousas Catholic, 3-2, in its morning semifinal. Abbey Devillier got the win and didn’t allow a hit in three innings of relief for CHSPC. Sydney Welch opened the sixth with an infield single and scored the winning run on an OCHS error.
Third-seeded Maurepas scored four runs in the top of the seventh en route to a 4-3 win over No. 2 Calvin. Pitcher Ali McCoy retired 16 straight batters at one point and also had one two hits for the Wolves in the seventh.
