Dutchtown opens with 5-0 win over Live Oak
GEISMAR — Playing in front of a sizable home crowd in the first round of the Division I girls soccer playoffs, Dutchtown High School dominated Live Oak en route to a comfortable 5-0 win at Griffin Field on Friday night.
Dutchtown, District 5 co-champs in 2012 with a 15-9 regular-season record, got goals from Jaynie Stewart, Ashley Alexander, Torie Foumet, Lindy Robichaux, and Logan Blouin in a match it dominated from start to finish. The Lady Griffins will travel to face Byrd of Shreveport in the next round.
“We possessed the ball well and had lots of shots at goal,” Dutchtown coach Anant Vynas said. “At halftime I told them to be patient, move the ball, and create situations where their defense was unbalanced.”
The Lady Eagles, who went 10-8-2 on their way to the District 4 runner-up spot, had only 14 healthy players for their final match of a season that saw them lose players because of various injuries.
“Dutchtown is a great team,” Live Oak coach Dave Young said. “They’re seeded No. 10; I hope they do well.”
Stewart scored Dutchtown’s first goal in the fifth minute of the match, with a free kick that Lady Eagles goalkeeper Christina Roddy misplayed in the penalty area. Stewart’s long-range attempt was misread by Roddy, who allowed the ball to go over her head into the back of the net.
The Dutchtown goal spurred Live Oak into life, and the Lady Eagles began to even the possession stakes and make offensive forays into the attacking third of the field.
It was almost for naught though as the Lady Griffins almost doubled their lead midway through the half. Robichaux crossed the ball across the face of the Live Oak goal, where two Lady Eagles players missed attempts at clearances. Summer Bernard gathered the ball and lined up a shot, only to have it blocked by a Live Oak defender.
The Lady Eagles were dealt a blow in the 25th minute when Peyton Meyers collapsed after taking an inadvertent elbow to the face while competing for a 50-50 ball. Meyers lay motionless on the pitch for a full 20 minutes before being stabilized and carried off by a stretcher.
Almost immediately after the restart, Dutchtown doubled its lead when Alexander broke away from the Live Oak defense and slotted the ball past Roddy into the goal.
Live Oak switched goalkeepers at halftime, but new keeper CC Long couldn’t do much when, three minutes after the restart, Foumet blasted the ball home from point-blank range after defender Lauren Larson missed her clearance attempt deep inside the penalty area.
In the 62nd minute, Robichaux unleashed a powerful shot from 20 yards out that flew off Long’s fingertips into the goal, giving the Lady Griffins a 4-0 lead.
Blouin picked up Dutchtown’s fifth and final goal minutes later when she calmly fired the ball past Roddy from nine yards away.
