St. Joseph’s claims 2-1 overtime win over BRHS

Emily Krzystowczyk and Jessica Dismukes each scored a goal, lifting 14th-seeded St. Joseph’s Academy to a 2-1 overtime victory over District 5 rival Baton Rouge Magnet High to open the Division I girls soccer playoffs.

BRHS (11-12-2) actually had five shots on goal, compared to four for SJA (11-13-1) in the first-round match played Thursday at the Burbank Soccer Complex.

The two goalkeepers, SJA’s Meghan Flechas and Baton Rouge High’s’ Rachel Bourgeois, each finished with three saves. Emily Segura scored the lone goal for 19th-seeded Bulldogs.

With the win, the Redstickers advance to play the Dominican-Comeaux winner in the regional round.

UNIVERSITY 9, PARKVIEW BAPTIST 0: Annabell Simpson scored five goals to help third-seeded UHS (17-1-2) shut out District 6 rival Parkview (3-11-1) in a Division III first-round match.

Jessica Williamson, Veronica Williamson, Madison Kirkpatrick and Jacqueline Samson each added one goal for the Cubs, who advance to play the Opelousas Catholic-North DeSoto winner in the regional round.

RUNNELS 13, ECOLE CLASSIQUE 0: Sadie Kraft scored five goals and Jessica Shelby added four for the Raiders in their Division III first-round victory.

Rhaliat Animashaun added two goals, while Olivia Arboneaux and Erin Dean each had one goal for sixth-seeded Runnels, which advances to play 11th-seeded Menard-Alexandria, a 4-0 winner over St. Frederick

CADDO MAGNET 1, ZACHARY 0: In Zachary, the host Broncos lost their Division I first-round contest.

Friday’s girls action

First-round girls action continues Friday with five contests. Second-seeded Episcopal hosts No. 31 Christian Life for a Division III match at 5 p.m.

At 6:30 p.m., No. 10 Dutchtown hosts No. 23 Live Oak in a Division I matchup that features two local teams.

Late boys changes

Two boys teams changed the venue for their first-round contests set for Friday.

In Division I, Catholic High will host Natchitoches Central at 7:30 p.m. at Parkview Baptist. The game was originally set for the Burbank.

District 6 rivals Broadmoor and St. Michael the Archangel originally hoped to play their Division II first-round contest at Woodlawn High. The 7 p.m. contest is now set for Field 5 at Burbank.

University leads the Division III boys contingent set to play on Friday. The Cubs host Houma Christian at 6 p.m.
