The Wild Side: Your freezer can feed others

It’s a Capital City area celebration the likes of which belongs to one group and one group only.

The Clean Out Your Freezer Day belongs to us, Louisiana’s outdoorsmen. Hunters and fishermen by the thousands have contributed more than 80 tons of frozen game, meat and fish during the past 19 years to help feed the homeless and hungry in the 12 parishes served by the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

Everyone who’s taken the few minutes to extract game, fish, even store-bought meats from their freezer can pat themselves on the back for that collective effort, because the meat and the protein provided helped keep folks alive in our communities for nearly two decades.

Beyond game and fish, the Hunters for the Hungry Committee and the Food Bank will take that turkey you bought but never got around to putting on the smoker, and that brisket that was supposed to set for hours on the pit for July Fourth sandwiches, and that Boston butt that was destined for pulled pork for opening weekend of the football season.

It’s time for a little prodding. Take a few minutes today to adopt the H4H slogan “Hunters who care, share” and donate. The Saints play Monday night, so that’s no reason to miss the 1-4 p.m. collection time.

And we can celebrate the six new collection sites in the Acadiana area.
