Hunters rescued

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Enforcement Division agents rescued one hunter and a good Samaritan rescued another from the Pearl River Canal in Washington Parish after boat the two hunters were riding in capsized on their way to a duck hunt Friday morning in the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area.

Stephen Leicher, 27, from Bush, and James Rogan, 26, from Bogulusa launched a 13-foot-long boat in the Pearl River Canal and told agents their boat sank around 5:15 a.m.

The LDWF report stated: "At 9:15 a.m. a passing boater noticed Leicher clinging to some woody debris in the canal and was able to get him in his boat. Leicher was found near entrance of Ox Lot Canal. They then notified LDWF agents about Rogan who was still missing. At 10:10 a.m. agents found Rogan on the bank near Past Creek a mile in a half downstream from where Leicher was found."

The LDWF release said Leicher and Rogan were checked emergency medical personnel then release. The report also indicated neither men were wearing life jackets.

LDWF agents responding to the call were Sgt. Darryl Galloway and Senior Agent Joel Cromp.
