Miles: Lee still starting QB

LSU coach says Jefferson will have an ‘opportunity’

LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday night that he “absolutely" expects reinstated quarterback Jordan Jefferson to contribute to the team, conceivably as soon as the game against Kentucky on Saturday morning in Tiger Stadium.

“I can’t imagine he’d be ready to play this Saturday,” Miles said, “but I wouldn’t rule it out.”

Jefferson and reserve linebacker Josh Johns were reinstated Wednesday shortly after an East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted Jefferson on a misdemeanor charge of simple battery rather than second-degree battery, a felony, and declined to press any charges against Johns.

Jefferson was the starting quarterback until he and Johns were arrested Aug. 26 and booked on one count each of second-degree battery stemming from a fight outside Shady’s bar, 623 E. Boyd Drive, a week earlier.

In Jefferson’s absence, senior quarterback Jarrett Lee has helped lead the Tigers to a 4-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the latest Associated Press Top 25.

“Right now Jarrett Lee is our starting quarterback,” Miles said. “What we would want to do is add a skill set. There would be an opportunity just like a year ago when Lee played in (10 games). There would be that opportunity for Jordan Jefferson.”

Jefferson, a senior who has a 20-7 record as a starter over the last three seasons, will become the No. 2 quarterback ahead of sophomore Zach Mettenberger, who played the second half of a 49-3 victory against Northwestern State three weeks ago.

Though Lee has played well, he does not have the running ability that Jefferson possesses, so Jefferson’s return gives the Tigers an opportunity to run a wider variety of plays.

“I think there is an opportunity to increase our productivity on offense,” Miles said, “which would be for Jarrett Lee to continue doing what he has done and Jordan Jefferson to come into the game and do what he can do most significantly.”

Miles said Jefferson’s return, Lee’s play so far and the experience Mettenberger got in Jefferson’s absence makes the Tigers “better at quarterback than we have ever been.”

LSU Athletic Director Joe Alleva announced the players’ reinstatement in a statement issued by the university.

“We certainly don’t condone participation in the incident,” Alleva said, “but the legal system has determined that their actions did not rise to the level originally charged, and their punishment to date related to football has already been considerable.”

I would like to see Lee continue as starting QB because he is quick to make decisions. Jefferson, on the other hand, has the physical and athletic ability to run or to pass, but he seems to be easily confused by the opponents defense at times and cannot make snap adjustments fast enough. I believe that Miles should use a 2 QB offense as a breather to Lee, and to utilize Jefferson's running abilities. GEAUX TIGERS!!!

@fanknowsnothing-your user name is fitting. Regardless who won the starting job prior to the season. Jarrett Lee led them to four wins. LSU were national champs with two QB's that were not runners, they could think and execute. Thank You!!!

Alright everyone. lets calm down. Lee should be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season. That does not mean that there is not room for improvement. Yes hes has done well. However, the tigers will need more options to beat the likes of Florida and Bama. LSU is two dimensional with lee alone. Straight back pass of handoff to the running backs. JJ brings the 3rd dimension as a running quaterback. Use him as much as necessary to compliment lee and the offense.

so glad to see the felony charge dropped. but i would rather loose the rest of the season than reinstate them on the team. Lee is doing just fine. let him have it.

WOW. Les Miles has a difficult job. I don't know if I could handle all those hands holding microphones right in front of my face like that. I'd be scared somebody would try to pick my nose or eyeball out. That one hand is not even holding a microphone, appears it is holding out an old Ozzy Ozborne Cassette from the 80s.

@Dawson...Lee did lead them to the No. 1 ranking and if left alone to continue he will lead them to a National Championship!

Did anyone doubt for a minute that Jefferson was going to get off? Oh, I know he is now charged with a misdemeanor but he won't do any time for that. There are two standards of justice. One for the rich and famous and the other for the rest of us. And another thing, how is he going to pay a lawyer like Lewis Ungelsby? Sell his shoes?

Ever wonder how this would have played out if Jefferson would have been the one on the ground getting kicked?

@fansknownothing...you are as lost as any poster ever if you say Lee has done nothing. How many time has LSU been voted number 1 in the AP poll in the history of the program? Lee lead the Tigers to this ranking.

@TommyRucker...were you in the Grand Jury hearing or something? The charges were dropped which would lead you to believe they shouldn't have been entered in the first place. This would be the opposite of what you site about being above the law. If this was the case they would have never been charged or suspended. If you have evidence or proof to the contrary on what the Grand Jury was presented you should get it to the DA's office right away.

Lee has earned the right to be the starting quarterback! He has shown more maturity on and off the field than Jordan has ever done! I don't know if Jordan did everything he was accused of doing, but the fact remains he did break curfew (I don't care that most of the seniors do it as some kind of tradition) and got into trouble while out! Let him take his turn sitting on the sideline and being used as the backup quarterback!

Ok, forget about the charges being dropped against Jefferson. As a supposed leader of the team, he shouldn't have been there in the first place and dogged the curfew. A good lesson about football that i hope Miles understands. Defense is read and react, playing tough and making sure you take good angles, Offense is a rhythm. Right now Lee is managing the game and LSU for the first time since their last title season has an actual identity. Something that since Jefferson became the starting OB, hasn't had. If Miles puts Jefferson anywhere on the field, that rhythm that the Offense has will go bye bye and you can forget about LSU winning a National Championship. With Lee on the field you have a QB that can stretch the field vertically and not let the defense sit back and overload the box because they know and are not afraid of the pass, something every defense that Jefferson faced knew. This team doesn't need a two tandem QB situation. Let Lee manage the game, let the backs run and the receivers catch.

This decision doesn't surprise me at all. College football is a business, BIG business. LSU has way too much invested in Jordan Jefferson to allow him to warm the bench for the rest of the season. Consequences for bad behavior? Nah, Alleva says "their punishment to date related to football has already been considerable." What punishment?! Tell that to the person Jefferson injured. Personally, I would prefer that the team "leader" be someone of good character who can actually LEAD!

The judicial system along with most aspects of government is more and more corrupt every day. CORRUPTION is alive and well in America in spite of what the propaganda machine tell us. There has never been a secular system that man could not corrupt and never will be. The truth continues to be trampled on by our system. It is going to get harder and harder to find people to die for it. We have moved to a highly paid military force today because of it and we cannot really afford it. If we had to move to a massive military force that existed at the time of WWII, we could collapse because we could not pay the salaries and benefits demanded. People serve today because of the benefits and less for the love of country and an erosion of basic beliefs in systems like the judicial system have a lot to do with it.

One other thing to consider in the Lee/Jefferson debate: emotional stability. If nothing else, Jarrett Lee has been through h3ll and back with this team; after seeing his composure through the first 4 games, I doubt there's much that can rattle this kid. For comparison, Jefferson has been known to be "streaky", hot and cold. I wonder how he would have held up in StarkVegas, or WVU when they started making a comeback in the 3rd. Would he have panicked? Would he have risen to the occasion? I don't know, but at this point Lee has shown the composure needed to take this team to N.O. in January. Jefferson may have that ability, too, but at this point Lee has PROVEN that ability, where JJ is only POTENTIALLY capable. No slight intended to Jefferson, but at this point I think Lee should wear the mantle until he is no longer the best QB on the field for LSU.

16) Comment by TommyRucker - 29/09/2011

LSU football players, like most college football players, are above the law. it has been like that for decades, so this is no surprise. It is just a matter of how much they will be allowed to get away with. If you know the right people and are in position to make a lot of money for yourself and other people, then you are treated differently and given special treatment in our society. It has been proven time and time again, so this is really nothing new. The system is a farce and the propaganda keeps telling us how great the system is but reality tells us something else. A common trick today is to reduce the charges to a level of absurdity and is done all the time. Justice is not blind, it is manipulated by power and money.

17) Comment by justagirl - 29/09/2011

@fansknownothing Lee has led the Tigers to 3 victories on the road against ranked teams and a number 1 ranking. I wouldn't say that is a simple task, would you? Whether you like him or not Lee is getting the job done and unless he starts failing I see no reason why he should lose his starting position. Jefferson is a great quarterback but things happen and as long as Lee is doing well why hand the job back over to Jefferson who hasn't been a part of the team since before the season even started?

18) Comment by redavaw1 - 29/09/2011

If Jeffereson wants the starting job, he should have to get out there and take it from Lee by being better, just like anyone else would have to do. I think it's going to be hard to beat Lee's record so far this season. In my opinion, he is just another troubled quarterback like Perrilloux. We should wash our hands of him and move on! Anyone who would get into a fight and stomp on someones neck until they break it has serious issues. Boo! Hiss!

19) Comment by fansknownothing - 29/09/2011

Jarrett Lee never beat Jefferson out for the starting job in camp or in practice. Jefferson will be the starter once again in the near future. Lee has done well but it's not like he's been asked to do anything overly difficult (short throws on quick drops....) or has done anything amazing.

20) Comment by LawyerDan65 - 29/09/2011

Two questions: 1. Will Jefferson fill the Perrilloux role (no pun intended) of running a wildcat like formation 5-10 plays a game?; and 2. Will Jefferson demand a trial on the misdemeanor charge or take a plea?
