The freshman and East Feliciana product is making a strong push to see time at the strongside linebacker spot along with reserve Kwon Alexander. That the 6-foot-3, 246-pound Beckwith is making an early impression shouldn’t be much of a surprise, considering Beckwith played in the Under Armour All-America Game. But with the size to play linebacker or defensive end, the question is where Beckwith sees himself seeing snaps.
The Advocate: A lot of observers have talked about you coming in and making an early impression How has camp been for you?
Kendell Beckwith: It’s been going well. It’s been a big jump, and I really had to grow up and catch on fast.
TA: There was talk of you potentially winding up at defensive end. How comfortable are you working at the outside linebacker spot?
KB: I’m real comfortable. Linebacker is the position that I’ve always wanted to play. So far, I’m feeling really good there.
TA: So could your role still have you put your hand on the ground, or do you think that’s been ruled out for good?
KB: I could do that. Actually, I was working on some drills with the defensive ends, so I can be able to line up on the edge and rush from the outside if I need to.
TA: Obviously, there’s been the stated fact that freshmen will see the field if they earn that right. Where do you think you are in seeing reps?
KB: I think there’s a chance, and the coaches definitely stress that the opportunity is there. The door is open. It’s up to us. We just to have learn our plays, go out and do the job.
