Astros sign ex-Tiger Chris Cotton

Former LSU left-hander Chris Cotton signed with the Houston Astros and been assigned to their short-season Class A affiliate in the New York-Penn League.

Cotton, a 14th-round draft choice, is on the roster of the Tri-City ValleyCats, who are located in the area of Albany, Schenectady and Troy in upstate New York.

He has a couple of familiar faces as teammates as former Vanderbilt infielder Tony Kemp, the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year whom the Astros selected in the fifth round, and former Arkansas left-hander Randall Fant, a 29th-round pick, are also members of the ValleyCats.

LSU won two out of three games at Arkansas and split two games with the Razorbacks in the SEC tournament before defeating Vanderbilt in the title game.

Cotton, who was 4-1 with a 1.16 earned run average and tied a Tigers record with 16 saves this past season, is the second player from the 2013 Tigers to sign professionally.

Infielder Mason Katz, a fourth-round pick, signed with the St. Louis Cardinals. Right-hander Ryan Eades, a second-round draft choice, is expected to sign with the Minnesota Twins on Thursday.

Katz was assigned to the Cardinals affiliate in the N.Y.-Penn League — the State College (Pa.) Spikes — setting up a possible matchup between the two former teammates.

Tri-City plays at State College on July 30-Aug. 1.
